While it’d have felt good to read that from the other side of the world, it wouldn’t have been a good idea for her own survival.

On the walls of our prison cells, we saw bullet holes with bloodstains and messages carved into the walls by Palestinian prisoners who had been there before us.

I was in the Marine Corps, as an 03xx, joined around the surge, and have earned my CAR over many instances of heavy contact. I say this only because I’m not sure how I’d respond in this situation.

I’ve been in the brig, I’ve been put in an isolation cell there, and I’ve been arrested and held in county lockup. In both those instances I had access to my life-saving medication through a nurse, access to a lawyer who was working for me throughout the process, etc.

I’ve never been in a situation where my basic needs are being ignored by someone who sees me as an enemy and is torturing me, with no access to a lawyer, consulate services that are blasé about the whole fucking thing, then being taken back to a cell with bullet holes and bloodstains in the concrete or cinder blocks or whatever, all the while having absolutely no idea when, if ever, it will end and I’ll be released.

It’s a powerless situation, and fighting back will make it worse. You know intellectually that you probably won’t die here, but every bit of feedback you’re receiving from your environment says it is a very real and likely possibility. Your mind starts telling you fucking wild shit that gets harder to block out the longer the bullshit goes on.

The fact that the other flotilla prisoners were antagonizing the guards with the “slay” comments when Greta would pass by speaks volumes to their tenacity and resolve in the face of overwhelming adversity, and I’m personally happy that the people fighting for human rights chose that method of antagonizing the guards instead of the kind that comes from a place of hatred and a desire to enact violence against the person across from you but being unable, so you chose the most violent thing you can get away with in that moment.

All this to say, I agree with you completely, Grimy’s comment was ridiculously naive at best.

          Name, rank, and serial number.

You ever hear the story of the POW that stayed sane by building an entire house in his mind, brick by brick?

My comment isn’t putting her tenacity into question, it’s a statement on what that flag deserves.

Stop over reading into things, you are constantly fishing for slights just so you can have your little internet fights.
