This has completely killed my desire to listen to random music albums ive never heard of on YouTube. Sadly.
this is why i’ve switched to strictly listening to kasane teto songs
lofi is DEAD now, all similar ai slop. i mourn for it, it was nice.
I only discover bands through KEXP, Tiny Desk, local shows and whoever is opening for my favorite artists, so I should be good. All the “related” and “recommendeds” of the world are dead to me. I’m keeping it in the family.

“The AI has won”
Come back to it a week later. It sucks. Start looking for something more novel and organic
“Who is this Miles Davis guy? What’s a Dizzy Gillespie?”
Tastes original high quality art. Has a cathertic experience. Comes back to AI Slop one more time.
“Holy mother of God, this music is actual dog shit”

“Hmmmm, human music. I like it.” - Jerry Smith of Rick & Morty
It’s over
We are getting closer and it makes me very sad.
There were some songs (of different genres) which I thought “huh, sounds really good” and then noticed, that it was AI (either by a disclaimer in the description, people in the comments or by the voice; the voice of AI is still fairly noticeable) and went “fuuuuuuuck, now I don’t want to like it”. And this annoys me, as I know it will happen more often and also that I will miss out noticing it more. AI creations can get flooded while real creators getting drowned out (looking with much disgust at you Pixiv and DeviantArt).
But I also want to add that I am not against AI assisted music creations. But then the creator must disclose where and how much the AI was involved.
I found a YT channel that talks about WWI/WWII and other wars guns in quite a detail. Seems cool and all. But then I checked date of the channel created and how often they upload. 2 years old, uploads every 3 days or so. Can’t be a real person. Voice is perfect, doesn’t sound anything like AI. Footage looks legit. But I fail to believe that even a small team under 80k sub YT channel can research, compose and record a video in 3 days.
We’re cooked. We been a long way in “don’t believe anything on the internet” and now it has become “dont believe anything at all”
I refuse to consider anything AI generated to be legitimate art.
There’s nothing intentional about it, you simply give a prompt to a machine and it matches the pattern. That isn’t art just like how doing madlibs isn’t the same as writing literature.
A person using AI tools can be ok as long as it’s a human doing the overall composition.
Like using AI to make samples to use in a song is fine, using AI to generate the entire song isn’t.

I mean I don’t like the ai music but only because you can hear it.
Now I don’t want to hear anything that is similar, so music that sounds a bit like AI but isn’t is now out of the door too.
But I also want to add that I am not against AI assisted music creations.
I thought this was a great TED talk describing how AI can be used in the composition and “recording” of works where a human is still in the driver’s seat. In this person’s case, it’s still a human mostly performing and singing, but just fed through an algorithm that makes it sound like another (famous) singer.
I stopped using Spotify exactly for this reason. Plex it is.
I got recommended a new song by Architecture in Helsinki. Oh holy shit, they’re back together and released something?
Nope, someone spoofed the band name and its an AI generated song about Minecraft. Somehow this still caused it to get immediately recommended to me.
Spotify is playing AI music? Or just the music recommendation algo?
I feel like Spotify went downhill when they fired all the playlist makers, it’s so ass for finding new music because the algo tries to keep you in a bubble.
That’s true, idk anything about Spotify’s history but I joined hoping it would help me find cool music and it really didn’t. I know my friend uses it for that and it works for him, I think though the music I’m starting with is too specific and narrow or smth (even though there’s several different genres)
I wish there was just some quiz thing where it plays 300 little clips and you rate how good they sound, and then it could iteratively refine the quiz and recommendations as you go on
Yeah it really sucks because they used to have people putting together the playlists and then I could just go into the playlist of songs I like and find other songs that are similar but different. There was enough drift on it but I could find new music easily.
Now the algorithm just keeps trying to redirect me the songs I already like/know. It’s a much tighter bubble than just sticking with a genre or even sub genre.
The whole point of
generative AIplagiarism laundering machines is to make it harder to tell you’re consuming a soulless regurgitation of legitimate talent.tbf, a lot of pop and generic stuff is incredibly soulless and it was made by people. One silver lining is that hopefully the artistic part will be more embraced in music because the driving force for a lot of it is money and not art. Not defending AI in any way though, fuck that bullshit to hell.
There’s a formula people like, so they just repeat stuff
maybe it will force people to get more creative and experimental
not if they want to earn any money, I just make music for myself now tbh
I once did a remix competition. Not to win, just to have fun playing with samples and the discipline of having a time limit. I knew going in that what I was going to do had 0 chance of getting anywhere near the top.
The winning three entries were judged by the website, the artist, and 3 executives from the record label. And the winning 3 entries were all exactly the same.
They were all the same style of EDM (bear in mind, this was a poppy guitar song being remixed, so there was no particular driving factor towards that direction), they had similar bass lines & synth parts - both in terms of the riffs themselves and in terms of the sounds used. They all sped up and pitched up the vocal and chopped it in a very similar way. And they all had the exact same structure. You could literally play all three simultaneously (after timestretching by a couple of BPM to make them the same tempo) and the intro would be the same number of bars, the beat would come in at the same time, the vocals would come in at the same time, the dropdown would come in at the same time, the build-up would come in at the same time and lasted the same number of bars, they had the same bar of silence after the build-up, and then the drop did very similar things with the bass and all three went into half-time simultaneously.
There were hundreds of entries, and really what you had to do was make something that sounded like everything else. It was depressing, honestly.
I would like to hear more of that for real, stagnant ass music lately unless you just live in the underground
I hate that AI is controlled by a few huge corporations and that it consumes ungodly amounts of resources. Otherwise I’d be completely fine with it. At least 90% of anything is shit anyway and everything humans create is built on what came before, so I think AI just mimics what we’ve been doing since forever. But as it is controlled by just a few assholes who burn the planet down even faster I am against it.
People have free will and while most people don’t bother using it, a few in each generation think differently. Those are people like Einstein, Picasso, Hypatia, Curie, Yeshua, Tolkein, Wachowski, Ray. They bring genuinely new ideas into the space of human thought. If AI writes all the books, we don’t get any more Voltaires. If AI makes all the movies, we don’t get any more del Toros. If AI writes all the songs, we don’t get any more Hendrixes.
We get Hendrix copycats, sure. But nobody is going to change the game the way all the people I listed changed the game.
If you could make a time machine and ask all of those people who their inspirations are you will get a list of multiple people from each. No one is 100% uninspired by other people. That’s just not how art or science works.
That doesn’t mean AI can replace human creativity. Maybe it will. Maybe it won’t. Maybe we’ll reject it for not being human for as long as its distinguishable. But the argument that visionaries in human history were somehow uninspired is not the reason why AI won’t get there.
Good thing I didn’t make that argument you’re criticising
That’s alarmist nonsense. There will always be people still doing all those things. AI, in general, is just another tool. There will always be someone who changes the status quo. Always.
Yes but being a musician shouldn’t necessistate being a genre defining artist.
Nobody said that. AI is not stopping anyone from making music. In fact, my point is that people will still create art, despite AI being a thing. AI will be incorporated by some, definitely not all, artists. Just like electronics were before. The electric guitar and synthesizers were once new too.
“All” being the key word, and obviously wrong.
In my opinion that says more about Jazz than about LLMs trying to mimic real music.
‘Surely this won’t affect what I like,’ said people with no pattern recognition.
Damn that’s racist.

Or is it?

Black people finally invented a music white people didn’t want to steal.
It doesn’t say anything about LLMs, they just do lyrics, and they’re definitively shit, and you can tell right away.
Image generation models actually aren’t terrible at generating melodies, so for genres like Jazz and EDM they make surprisingly acceptable music.

Is this not a genuinely great song?
Once you realize all of modern Western music is simplified jazz with new timbre, it makes a lot more sense. (Someone come and fight me about how John Coltrane)
I asked my daddy for a guitar Oh, I begged and I plead I said I wanted to play the blues And he just nodded his head Daddy said when he was my age Boogie-Woogie was the thing Just take the blues, throw out your hip And add a little swing
[…]
Ha! I kept learnin’ all the powers my guitar had I made to go wakka wakka 'Till it was so good it was bad Just make a face And stomp that bass And make that rhythm bump This is just the blues But in a way that makes ya wanna shake your rump I can make you clap your hands I can make you get up and dance If you wanna shake your booty My friend, you gotta give the funk a chance
[…]
Metal! Pound your fist in the air! Metal! Bang your head full of hair! Its crunchy and its nasty Full of bad attitude Your parents’ll think you’re crazy Your neighbors’ll think you’re rude Believe it or not Its just the blues again You just add a little fuzz And turn your amp up to 10! Music has the power to change your life forever
Ay, wasn’t expecting Phineas and Ferb in here
I’m a fairly recent jazz convert, and there’s absolutely no way I would be able to tell the difference. None.
Just hitting random notes counts as jazz, right?
If you do it once, it’s a mistake; if you do it twice, it’s jazz. This is the rule.
Only if you’re H Jon Benjamin and have an actual jazz band playing with you
I mean, if an infinite number of monkeys writing forever will produce the entirety of Shakespeare’s œuvre, surely they’d manage some Miles Davis or some Coltrane if you gave them instruments.
If it grooves it might
wow, this is disgusting.
and not OPs jazz i was looking for
