The truth about the movie theater business is, they really don’t make money off their ticket sales, which barely cover the cost of day to day operations. They make money off their concessions, which is why they are priced so highly.

Concessions are what keeps them in business. That’s why it costs $18 for popcorn and a soda or $25 for Popcorn, Soda and Candy (if you have AMC A List)

If you claim to be a fan of film and filmmaking and like going to the movie theatre and like the movie-going experience, then sneaking snacks into the theatre is wrong because if you are a real movie fan, then you should support the movie theatre you go to. It doesn’t matter if it’s AMC, Regal, or Cinemark; you have a moral obligation to support these movie chains if you claim to be a movie fan. Not only are you supporting the theatre, but you are also supporting the directors and the people who worked on the movie you are watching.

I go to the movies multiple times a week, and I always get snacks at my AMC.

If you claim to be a movie fan, then you should support the theatres in every way you can; if you don’t, then you aren’t a movie fan.

If I’m going anywhere, I’m bringing food. No one is losing out. I’m not buying your overpriced crap just because it’s there.

Put your shower thought in unpopular opinion.

Capitalism sucks and you shouldn’t be force to pay ridiculously inflated prices for snacks because the parasites owning the movie industry want a bigger paycheck.

The people making the movies, writers, actors, makeup artists, they all already got paid to do their job. Box office sales is just the money the corporate gets to rake in.

Most small local theatres are shut down and replaced by chains already. So that doesn’t help either.

Basically this, and this also leads to the only exception to the “not-buying-snacks” rule that I have:
In our town there is a small independent cinema (besides the big chain one), that has a little pub/cafe attached.
I make a point in coming early or meeting way before the film start and order a drink at the bar or so. Just feels right (and also is fun somehow).

Ehhh, this seems like a stretch.

I’m pretty sure the cast and crew get 0% of popcorn sales on their movie.

Former movie crew, can confirm, I never got my movie theater popcorn check.

Depending on which part of the world you are in the cinema doesn’t even pay rent.

They are used as loss leaders of shopping centres.

If your criterion is that the theater isn’t making as much as they otherwise would, then failing to donate your entire paycheck to the theater is also “objectively wrong”.

I generally don’t eat in the theater anyway, but when I do I buy from the theater’s concessions… as a courtesy, not because I think it exemplifies some kind of objective morality. And if I did bring in food, I’d be supporting some other business that may be equally or more deserving.

They dont make much on tickets, true. But they sure as fuck don’t lose so much money that a 12oz can of Coke should cost $10+. They’re prices go beyond simply getting back into the black. It’s straight up greed.

Hey, uh, out of curiosity, what do you think of movie piracy? Should someone who never pays be able to call themselves a fan, or are those people not “real” fans?

To add a different kind of unpopular opinion:
I hate the whole popcorn munching in cinemas, so I applaud everyone who sneaks in their own stuff, as that won’t be popcorn.

Besides that, cinema halls are practically never full, so the cinema earns practically 100% of my entry price without loosing anything (as the seat I sit on doesn’t care if it is occupied or empty).

I never buy snacks, but I also don’t sneak anything in.
I don’t understand the whole obsession with eating tons of stuff while watching a film in public. I think that is a really strange urge that many seem to have.

At our cinema it will still be popcorn. The wee coffee shop right next to the cinema entrance does a roaring trade in popcorn.
