A number of European countries have reintroduced conscription or a form of incentivised military service for their young citizens since Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. But what systems exist across the continent?
My controversial opinion is that conscription is pretty awesome. Not just for the state but also for the young people conscripted. It gives young people in a bad home situation an out which their parents can’t question. And if you really don’t want to do military service, there are a million ways to avoid it.
There is something to be said for a requirement for all for a period. It makes it where everyone has something like basic training which should include all kinds of useful things like first aid and swimming and such. It makes sure the rich and connected cannot get out of it. The main thing is you need non combat options if your a conscientious objector. Medic or such.
