So, I tried playing doki doki literature club and I just couldn’t manage it. I feel like I’m missing out, but I’ve never wanted to play a video game less. Flirting with teenagers for hours to get to the interesting bits was killing me.

I played it for the first time recently and it was fine. But it certainly wasn’t the life-changing mind-fuck everyone raved about back in the day.

Basically, if it didn’t appeal to you you’re really not missing out all that much. Check out a let’s play on Youtube if you’re really curious about the story.

To be fair, the mind fuck was over once people started talking about it. Even the warning when the game starts gets you suspicious. When you’re expecting a cutesy visual novel and all of a sudden …

        spoiler

Your childhood friend is hanging in their bedroom.

That changes the game immediately. Going into it knowing something is up with the game means when you get to that part, at best, you’re like “oh that’s why”.

If you’ve never played anything like it, then yeah it’s a mindfuck, but honestly there are better games in its “genre” (games that have 4th wall breaks).

I was hoping for something a little more “horror”/psychological, similar to what Doki Doki Literature Club did.

Thanks for the recommendations, though. I’ll check them out.

OneShot is a story puzzle game, with some horror, that’s imo the best 4th wall breaking game out there.

serial experiments lain for the PS1 is also a good one, and that is explicitly psychological horror. Just uhh, it’s barely a game and extremely janky, however, the story is absolutely amazing. you can play it online at laingame.net, just… be ready for some (intentional) jank and an extremely weird, non-linear story. also heavy content warnings for everything in DDLC and more.
