In a way, Trump is a good thing. He has shown the world that the US is not special, not exceptional, not somehow uniquely qualified for global “leadership” (I use “” because many people have mistaken US RULE for US leadership). We are just as susceptible to the same pitfalls as any person or group of people who find themselves in possession of a great deal of power. I hope that out of this a more democratic global order will emerge. The world does not need one country to stand above the rest and rule the peoples of Earth through military and economic hegemony, even if they do so in a supposedly enlightened and benevolent way, or in furtherance of “Western” or liberal values. What the world needs is international democracy.
"America has “walked away” from its allies. And the leader of the CODEL took no issue with that characterization.”
Not the headline quote but one that is just as important. This is a good article reflecting the dismay and anger our allies have for our current and likely post Trump government.
I don’t blame them and I feel the same. I will never trust the US again either.
The officer then said that even a swift return of America to its former role won’t matter.
Because “we will never fucking trust you again.”
I do not believe for a second that the rest of the world has learned a darn thing from what’s happening. The first Trump term caught them unaware, OK, that’s maybe understandable if you haven’t been following world politics for the last 50 years. But that should’ve been the warning shot.
Since Trump 2016, Europe as a whole for example did fuck all to increase its defence spending. Dedollarisation wasn’t even a thing outside of BRICS and US allies. Digital sovereignty was not a big issue at all and there were very few attempts to get out from under the heel of US power. 4 years of Trump, 4 years of senility and a Russian war later, only when Trump was voted in did countries start getting concerned. It was not until the security paper of last month, black on white, did it start ringing in the heads of some politicians world-wide.
Maybe the military heads of countries can be a little more frank and pissed at the situation, but politicians are fucking spineless weasels. If in 3 years a Democrat president is voted in and they made all the big moves to reverse Trump’s antics, I bet you the majority of politicians would breathe a sigh of relief and go straight back to making deals with the US again. They will sign multi-term deals of dependency on the US and claim “the period of danger is over” (or some other political bullshit speak).
Nobody’s going to convince me that if AOC and Manzani were sworn in as president and vice-president that the trust would absolutely be back again.
