Are there any celebrities that are confirmed to be using lemmy?

I know celebs have used Reddit, have any followed us to Lemmy that are confirmed. For example I know Adam from mythbusters was an active redditor or Arnold Schwarzenegger etc. Do we know if any have came along with us

Appreciate where this post is posted, but I doubt we’ll see any celebs on lemmy ever. I mean who are we who are here? Tech interested nerds at best, incels and tankies at the worst. Only one I could think would ever bother being here because he’s a based nerd is Henry Cavill

Agreed. My SO is looking for an alternative to reddit but I have nothing to recommend her to. I don’t even try to get her into Lemmy because there nothing here for her. This place is way more niche than most people here realize and the entire Lemmy as a whole is compareable in size and actvity to a single relatively popular subreddit.

True. Apart from mediocre memes and the same news over and over there is not much to do here if you aren’t into tech. It might actually be good if you spend too much time on reddit, but then again there’s also a sense of community and, let’s be honest, mindless relaxation in communities like makeup addiction, new parents, AITA or moldly interesting. They are all missing here. I had just discovered a bra that fits before the reddit shutdown. Now I will never find a bra that fits I guess.

I just hope to wait and see more ordinary people come along.

I get that, I’d be happy to have Henry here with us. Tbf to us all, I’m closer to technophobe than I am to tech interested but I do agree with what you’ve said. I’ve basically just followed links when Reddit api’s shut down and here I am, so it’s not a far shout for some celebrities to do the same but I’m still not holding my breath.

Not necessarily. If (big if) there’s enough users here then celebrities will come.

They’d want to form their own instance though, and for that reason it wouldnt have the glorious drama of /r/AMA - they would just delete any spicy stuff.

Don’t remember how reddit started? I’d say nerds and atheists, mostly. Now look at it, nerds hate it and christofascists love it. So don’t say there’s no chance of change.

Don’t know about hero but I still believe he’s a nerd. Felt like a lot of things in that article weren’t confirmed and were mere speculations by the writer. Not trying to defend the guy but I got no insight into those rumors and I don’t care enough to investigate

Not to mention that some of the things speculated are not even things you can really give the dude shit about. So he went put with someone for 10 days and it didn’t work out? That automatically makes him a bad person. The boner thing can absolutely be excused too, the male body is literally designed to erect the penis upon physical stimulation. Some men can have this happen from friction of their clothes alone.

Some of the other shit like the appropriate age thing is valid, but you can’t give him shit for the #metoo statement though because the news has created a scary place for men that are sexually active.

Basically the main thing I got from this article is “Wow, Henry Cavill is a man with a penis, he should be demonized! He also values the source material in his roles as well, what blasphemy!”

This is 100% incorrect. Men don’t feel unsafe approaching women because of the MeToo movement. Only incels and rapists are concerned, and they should be.

The fact that other men are parroting this tired bullshit is ridiculous.

No, it’s not any more unsafe for men now than it was before MeToo. False accusations of sexual assault and rape haven’t skyrocketed. It’s not a thing. So stop spreading misinformation.

That’s not 100% incorrect because I actually know people like this. Yes it does not apply to everyone but to ignore that it has affected normal men to some capacity would be ridiculous.

Keep in mind that I’m not saying there is anything wrong with #metoo itself, I think it is an awesome movement that helps put power in the hands of victims, I am simply stating that there are people who are not victims that abuse the movement for attention or financial gain which have hurt innocent PEOPLE, not just men. Everything good will always have a downside, that is just how it is.

The difference is, you don’t criticize a movement because of some outliers. And bringing up outliers in a movement just makes you seem like you have an agenda, or in this case like you’re defending rapists.

How am I criticizing a movement by making it aware that these things happen?

makes you seem like you have an agenda, or in this case like you’re defending rapists.

Oh fuck off, this conversation is done. If you genuinely somehow think it looks like I’m defending rapists based off what I said, then you are one of the last people who need to be involved in a legal movement. Remember, it is innocent until proven guilty, just because I’m not bloodthirsty to put someone in prison for twenty years before any evidence comes out doesn’t mean I do not support a movement whatsoever. I’m simply stating the fact that outliers like that HURT the movement, if you somehow cannot see that, then I cannot converse with you further.

I didn’t say he was a dick. Those are your words. I said he wasn’t the nerd hero people think he is.

In October 2015, 32-year-old Cavill fell for a 19-year-old Bristol University student at Mahiki nightclub in London. Her name was Tara King, and Cavill went public with their relationship shortly after it began.
In 2018, Cavill engineered a self-made disaster with his astonishingly insensitive remarks about how the #MeToo movement inconvenienced his love life.

According to a leaked transcript from the Deux U by DeuxMoi podcast, an anonymous source claimed that Cavill’s behavior on the set of The Witcher was distressing for some of his female colleagues. The source claimed that Cavill immersed himself in gaming and underwent noticeable personality changes on set in Season 2 of the series. The actor was said to deliberately sabotage the work of producer and showrunner Lauren Hissrich and the female writers on the show. According to the source, Cavill habitually disregarded and overlooked the women, undermining their ability to do their jobs. Instead, he is said to have bonded with a male writer and took to writing scenes himself without consulting with his other colleagues. The source also suggested that Cavill’s misogyny increased as work on new episodes of the show progressed, creating a challenging and oppressive environment for female staff.

Yeah, I’m definitely the wrong person to ask about Mastodon. I have an account and I scroll through some posts every few weeks or so if I’m bored. I don’t really use it.

        google: “celebrities on mastodon”

Seems there are not that much celebrities around, and Stephen Fry’s last post there is from early September. Idk. I guess celebrities post things on platforms like Twitter but don’t exactly spend their time on link aggregators / discussion platforms like Lemmy. I’ve seen a few on Reddit. But even on the bigger AMAs they often had a seperate account or someone do it for them. But there are a few on Reddit. And we here on Lemmy only have like 40.000 active users. So judging by the statistics I wouldn’t expect many celebs here.

I never understood twitter so it could be a big ask.

        Twitter (old school, original version)

Well, it is restricted to short messages. They are long enough to post a hot take on a subject but short enough that it is impossible to actually give a reasoned answer to something.

It makes it the perfect one liner and outrage machine service. Whether that was by accident or by design is up for the reader to decide.

I do love a hot take, I think I got that from blindboy though. His hot takes are chefs kiss

What I never understood about twitter was actually seeing what people say. Unless I follow them I don’t see their messages and I don’t know who to follow for the most active and enjoyable content, that was my main issue for twitter.

I think the beauty of this line of social media is that it is so anonymous in the sense that it doesn’t matter who is behind the username. It can be the most basic bitch in Ohio, a shut-in from Italy, a porn star from Hungary or a chart breaking pop star from London. As long they have something interesting to contribute, it does not matter at all who they are. No need to prove anything. Everybody can just be.

I’d be pretty surprised if people like Cory Doctorow aren’t on here, but most celebrities engage for a reason (eg to be seen and maintain their brand). It’s happening somewhat on Mastodon and on Threads, but even on Reddit it was limited to the occasional AMA for the most part. If people were participating, they were mostly using aliases.

I don’t think we have enough organic users yet to make an AMA kind of thing happen regularly with random celebs, and I suspect most of them aren’t yet drawn to the content and format we have so far.

Sheesh I hope not. Aren’t their marketers doing a good enough job? Many celebs want to be treated like ordinary people (which they all are, aside from their cardboard cutouts) and the last thing they need is be mobbed by idolators.
