summary for those who don’t know

this is Isabela from the Dragon Age series, she was a minor character in the first game, who became part of the main cast for the second game. As part of this, she received a major overhaul in appearance cause she’s just a generic default facegen character in DA:O. Now, because she is such a minor character in the first game, she literally only appears in a single building with shit orange lighting, gamers actually were able to delude themselves into thinking she’s white and they started whining about ‘blackwashing’ 🤢 (also there’s like a bunch of mods on Nexus that make her white thanks nexus (tbf I am convinced they probably would delete it if uploaded now but still fucken hell))

kicker: she’s significantly lighter skinned in the second game than in the first game (thanks bioware)

I always love when gamers throw a fit about black people existing in FANTASY worlds. Like I imagine there was probably some whinging about the D&D movie having a dark skinned elf, but I’m not about to go find it.

I think its weird when you have explicit ethnic divisions in fantasy setting but also every place is a melting pot. Like how can you tell that a guy is from Fantasy Realmia when fantasy realmia has every skin color from white to black to green to blue and also seven different kinds of half demon and samurai and vikings coexisting, and so does here.

Theres only a few properties that do this though. Most just have humans of varying hues without it mattering, or ethnic groups with explicitly different origins and homelands. Either of which would seem like they shouldn’t bother anyone. Like why would it be weird that a guy is brown when another guy over there is blue, and conversely why would it be weird that a guy from another place is different. “Somehow” people get mad still.

I replayed DA2 a few months ago. I was looking around for mods to use and came across a character redesign mod. A lot of their custom face designs were pretty good. Then it got to isabella. The guy made her white and a redhead. “She just isn’t romanceable in the vanilla game. This really makes her into romance material for me.” BRUH. Literally what the fuck.

You can have an orgy with her, leliana, zevran, and alistair, iirc. No cutscene though. She also teaches you the duelist specialization for rogues. Fairly important for a minor character. If you didn’t hit up the brothel you’ll never meet her though.

I played through Origins only once and as a mage, so I probably didn’t look around for her. Still, I liked her a lot on DA2, so it’s nice discovering she was in the first game

Yeah, she’s somewhat obscure and not the most memorable since she’s not recurring or anything

If you went to the Pearl you probably wouldn’t have missed her tho, she does draw a lot of attention, cause she has a fairly similar scene to her intro scene in 2. Probably she’s easier to remember if you (re)play DA:O after DA2 and recognise her from it
