Lemmy replaces Reddit, and we have Pixelfed for Instagram and Mastodon for Twitter. But what is a federated discord alternative ?

Idk if this is federated but the Matrix chat protocol usually comes up when discussing Discord alternatives

Matrix for an actually federated protocol with E2EE.
Revolt for discord-like, normie-friendly experience. No privacy features or federation as of yet.

Matrix is probably the most popular federated alternative to Discord out there right now. A lot of open source projects are now adopting it as their chat platform of choice and over the past few years it’s really started to gain momentum. They have a good dev team as well.

Matrix also has really cool features like E2E encryption for chat rooms and DMs. There’s also the concept of Spaces, which are like Discord servers but arguably more flexible.

I highly recommend checking out Element, which is the flagship client made by the guys driving the Matrix protocol.

It’s not using activityPub but isn’t the principle idea kinda the same? Revolt is open source and you can host your own server, and then each user can decide to which one to subscribe to using the client.

The servers are not talking to each other per se (I don’t really see the need for that anyway in software like this), but your client will look a lot like a fediverse once you populate it with dozens of different instances of revolt. At least that was my understanding of it, correct me if im wrong.

Federating (in case of software) means that the servers are talking between each other.

In case of Revolt, it’s just selfhosted. And you need an account for every server.

I’ts more of a protocol right ? I’ve heard about that one, but I struggled to use it though the thunderbird integrated client for matrix. I might give it another chance with a better client though

Yes, matrix is the protocol behind the tech.

As @krause said, element is the most popular client with matrix.org as the most popular instance. If you’re looking to setup your own instance, check out synapse.
