The late 90s to early 2000s had plenty of games that moved to 3d before anybody knew how to make a 3d game actually fun to play. Examples would include most games with “3D” in the title.
Nice try but Sonic Adventure fucks actually. What destroyed Sonic was a combination of the Sega-Sammy restructuring, tje publisher always rushing the games and an utter unwillingness to iterate on successful mechanics instead of throwing everything out every two games.
2000s games : mecanics are more importants than graphisms.

Yeah, game developers have been chasing fancy graphics since before most people here were born.
To add to that, mechanics design seems to have been a lot less intelligent back then.
