[Half Life 3 (HL3) doesn’t count as we already know that game is still a long way off from coming out. Like another 5 or more years.]

Same goes to Witcher 1 -> 3 to 3 -> 4 and almost Gta 1 -> 5 to 5 -> 6, and many more franchises. Why is it happening?
Demon Souls - DS3 to DS3 - Elden Ring wasn’t too far off either.
Expectations have gotten higher. If they were still making 2d top down GTA games I don’t think it’d take very long to make a new one. I also don’t think many people would buy them.
Imagine how much more difficult GTA5 was to create compared to GTA1 or 2, it’s the same for every long lived franchise.
People are spoiled for choice so devs have to entice people with something new, making the “same” game with the same graphics every time is a hard sell in today’s market
AAA game development has gotten significantly more costly and time consuming, to the point where it is now basically unsustainable and headed for imminent collapse.
For the Dark Souls example, though, I think it’s important to note that FromSoft still produced Sekiro in between Dark Souls 3 and Elden Ring, leaving only a 3-year gap for Elden Ring to come out. Not to mention that the time between Demon Souls to Elden Ring is still less than the time gap between Skyrim and Elder Scrolls 6, so it’s also orders of magnitude of difference.
And we got Armored Core soon after ER. FromSoft still puts out games reasonably often, while still being high quality. Some people may not like every game, but I don’t think anyone can say they’re putting out garbage like some other studios.
