I bought the cheapest $50 one I could find to see if it was worthwhile and I agree, it’s awesome — power and video both go through the USB C port, so I just plug it into my laptop and I’m good to go. Setting up a Raspberry Pi or Android TV dongle just got easier, too.

The one I purchased was a Yodoit PTM15. For $50, it’s not bad, with a 1080p IPS display. My biggest gripe is that the buttons are on the left side and the USB C ports and the mini-micro-wtf-is-this-hdmi port are on the right side, which means portrait mode is a non-starter (unless you mount it). Since my programming language of choice is TeX, this actually kind of sucks for me.

I initially scoffed at the vesa mount — why would I mount a portable monitor? — only to realize it could be very useful after reading your post and seeing your setup. Thanks for sharing. ❤

Edit: should note that I am a dipshit when it comes to colors (also sound — what is “tinny”?), so anything with the right number of pixels and a backlight is fine to me. The cheap monitor I got works with my workflow but may not work for you, as bright colors look very washed out (adjusting color temperature seems to help but I don’t know what I’m doing). If the quality of the picture is important to you, I would choose more carefully. Also note that you will try and press play on the screen multiple times and it’s not a touch screen.

Open to recs. I have had two cheap ones and they both kinda sucked, but I could recognise the utility and wished I had better expressions of them.

      what were they?

like I’d expect if those sucked they’ll suck. They’re basically laptop screens as a standalone.

Fair enough. I’m trying to find the links but the receipts appear to be lost to time
