Most obviously, no, nobody in the AI industry is “horrified” by this. Mildly inconvenienced, at worst. Anthropic is playing the role of Horrified, but there’s simply no chance that the courts will rule against Big Money.
Copyright is one of the many laws aimed only at little people. If you pirate a movie or photocopy a book, the omnipresent ‘they’ could come after you, and they’d win, and you’d be facing serious consequences. If you’re big and rich enough to steal from virtually every artist and author alive or dead, it’ll be ruled “fair use.”
It’s so strange. Disney, Nintendo and all these other huge companies have spent decades getting insane amount of copyright and hoarding their IP so that no-one can use it. If they have such a big influence on politics, why can’t they use that now to push for AI not just violating that all?
Same with the companies that targeted the internet archive.Lie Cheat and Steal
but don’t let us face any consequences!
FUCK THAT let it burn baby!!! LET THAT MOTHER FUCKER BURN
Makes sense, cause most LLMS train on everything and anything it doesn’t matter the licensing.
Copyright schmopyright, why aren’t they being prosecuted for all that invasive scraping, like Aaron Swartz was? They caused a heck of a lot more disruption. See for example the captchas and turnstiles nearly everywhere now, and the hassle of logging into anything without guessing pictures of traffic lights.
It will never happen, they are already “too big to fail”, the government is in their pocket, short of a complete social rebellion (which I hope becomes closer every day) I really can’t see this ever proceeding.
