I’ve pet a cheetah in real life in South Africa. It was insanely cute and even purred like a house cat. Then I pet a caracal kitten and bled a little. 10/10 would go back to SA!

What is it about big cats that even though they can eat you, you want to pet them? Big sharks? Not so much.

To be fair if I thought a shark would let me pet it without it costing me a hand I totally would. Humans seem to really like to try to hang out with most other animals in general, it’s just a case of which ones will tolerate us. Big cats also look pretty similar to their little domesticated cousins so I expect there’s also a fair degree of cultural reinforcement of “cat-shaped = friend-shaped”

Cheetahs are definitely cute. They just look like housecats but bigger. They also look like they’re crying all the time and get emotional support dogs in zoos

Ah, aren’t cheetahs the ultimate sweethearts though? They can even retract their fangs so you don’t have to feel threatened! Not many gentle giants among cats, you know

Yes, they like to “chuff” at you to see if they can scare you though.

Fangs as in teeth? No cats can do that. If you meant claws, then I think yes cheetahs are the only big cats that can somewhat retract their claws.

I read something wrong. It said something about cheetahs only being able to “semi”-retract their claws and I must have misread it as only cheetahs could semi-retract while other big cats couldn’t.

It’s the other way around, they are the only ones who can’t retract their claws.

Cheetahs are not a big cat and they’re non retractable like a dogs (I’ve been around hundreds) all big cats have retractable claws

They’re harmless to humans. They’re actually very shy. Some wildlife photographers had the opportunity to come close to them and they all say that cheetahs are very gentle. Example: https://dailybbnews.com/heartwarming-cheetah-photographer-encounter/

So no reason for “oh no”, you can go full “aww”. ;-)
