Of course, it’s everyone’s own decision what they do with their free time and it is not my place to judge anyone, but you could at least give a good idea a chance, right?
The second seems to forget that there are many, many rooms full of the same thing.

And not all the rooms are connected because some people don’t like some of the other people on the doors.
and that thing? racism
I was thinking the same memes and news, over and over again.
that works too, tbh
i was making a remark towards the problem of racism on the fedi (especially the microblogging side of fedi, but definitely here too)
it’s the main reason this network’s demographics skew so white compared to pre-musk twitter or even reddit
Also user:
- I like my mediocre house that I’ve lived in for years. Sure there may be some rotting boards and I don’t like the way the neighborhood is changing with all the new billboards, but it still feels like home.
- That other house may have a lot more doors and windows but it’s out in the sticks. Not all the utilities have been connected yet. It’s hard to find a bike lane and I can’t even get NFL Sunday Ticket over there.
- Even in the sticks, the house is in a left leaning town. My word, some of them don’t wear bras! And some of them even own tanks!
It looks promising though! Maybe I’ll get a little plot over there as a second home.
Great sales pitch but you’re lacking a bit:
“If you enter through the side door, you won’t be able to cook anything because it defederated from the kitchen and if you use the most popular door, you can’t sleep because the bedrooms have blocked you.”
“and the front door, leading to the most rooms, has been removed from the map by the makers of the house because they prefer you to use the side door that goes to their room”
( lemmy.world is not listed at https://join-lemmy.org/instances )
Yeah, why is that? I noticed that.
They said it’s because lemmy.world was getting too big. Decentralisation, etc.
Rather than redesign how their instance chooser works to de-emphasise instance size and nudge people towards other metrics they just hid lemmy.world and made the default sort “Random”. So now people end up on bad instances all the time.
I’ve wondered why we don’t have some sort of multi-account thing. Say you have a .world account and a .ml account. That would give you great coverage. If you could somehow link those two (or more) accounts then you could merge your feeds and post anywhere. Maybe a frontend could do this.
Most frontends actually do this.
Check https://phtn.app/Photon merges feeds from different accounts?
I glossed over that bit when I was reading their comment, lol.
Aw, I was hoping they introduced it
First one should read "A house that is a long sewage tube that never ends, filled with bots where you wade through knee-deep AI slop, dodge barely sentient sociopaths, and teenagers using slurs as “trolling” where only the most arrogant do well.
This describes some Lemmy instances as well tbh:-P
“no matter what entrance you chose”
Defederation enters the chat
That only happens in extreme cases
Since you’re a newer account, you might not be aware, but lemmy.world “preemptively” defederated from Hexbear before Hexbear even turned federation on.
Why? Just WHY?
Here’s a post from that time period about it if you want to go down the rabbit hole: https://hexbear.net/post/281580
User: And how exactly many doors (with different addresses and locks!) are better than a single one?
Also user: Free choice is so confusing… My brain hurts!
Bah we can only chose 2 options in Canada. If you suggest more you’re an extremist!
When I joined Lemmy, the map of the entrances was in a GitHub repository, and you had to pass a vibe check at whatever door you chose. The first door I chose suddenly disappeared a month later and I had to find a different door and wear a different hat when I come in.
The rooms you can see changes depending on which door you walk in through. The door I use now doesn’t like wallpaper and so none of the rooms appear to have any. There’s also a distinct lack of all the leg lamps that I hear people who come in through other doors complaining about. I’ve found a handful of rooms dedicated to different kinds of leg lamps, but only if I track them down and map them so I can find those rooms again later. And many of the rooms only have one or two pieces of furniture in them as well.
The first time I find a room that’s a quarter of an inch bigger than the dimensions of the house would allow, I’m selling this house of leaves-ass place and never looking back.

https://piefed.blahaj.zone/ could be a better place. PieFed has better filter features
I appreciate the recommendation, but that was just a jab at how the comparison in the meme really doesn’t work because trying to describe the Fediverse as a house results in a non-Euclidian house right out of a horror movie or something.
In my Father’s house there are many rooms…
If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also. And you know the way to where I am going.” Thomas said to him, “Lord, we do not know where you are going. How can we know the way?” Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. If you had known me, you would have known my Father also. From now on you do know him and have seen him.”
Oh it’s about IKEA
It’s called choice paralysis.

Nowadays I just point to https://piefed.zip/
You will be banned for the most mundane and petty shit by powermods in both houses.
Would you honestly want people here who can’t understand (checks notes) how “email” works?
Seriously, doing a DuckDuckGo or Kagi search would answer so many questions that do not need to be continually posted to a community over and over just to help foster “engagement” stats…
Also I doubt the complexity is the real reason - they just enjoy the comfortable and familiar, so that’s what they do, regardless of whatever they say.
Would you honestly want people here who can’t understand (checks notes) how “email” works?
I want enough people here so I don’t have to keep !football@sopuli.xyz , the community about the most popular sport on the planet, active with less than five other active users
Same for !movies@piefed.social and !lego@piefed.social
If we have to make 50 comparisons to find one that works for people, so be it
I just subscribed to the football one for shits, giggles and to help a bro out
At what point is that a solution looking for a need rather than the other way around? Of course it is more complicated than that - people won’t come unless they see it already, but they can’t participate unless it exists already.
What if you consolidated football, fútbol, hockey, etc. into a “sports” community? And movies + TV + videos into a “media entertainment” one? And LEGO et al. into “toys”? Fortunately PieFed offers an incredible amount of support for fragmentation of communities with multiple tools.:-)
football, fútbol, hockey, etc. into a “sports” community?
!hockey@lemmy.ca has Week: 14 / Month: 36 users
!football@sopuli.xyz has Week: 123 / Month: 264 users
!futbol@lemmy.world has 1 weekly and monthly active users
The userbase just isn’t there.
!television@piefed.social is active but relies mostly on one user
!movies@lemmy.world is mostly kept active by dwz@lemmy.world under different alts
The issue isn’t the community fragmentation, it’s the total number of active users. Anything that can help people coming here, be it another metaphor, is welcome.
Disregarding users who don’t see how email can be compared to a forum isn’t really achieving that goal.
Yes I used email as a proxy, and as so many others pointed out here already (and which I agree), the Fediverse is nowhere close to being as simple as e.g. Reddit to use.
I really like your earlier idea to just recommend like 3 instances, then link to a longer-form post listing out all the various factors such as “is the instance based in the USA”, “are conservatives going to feel welcomed there” (no), “what about the tankie issue”, etc.
But THEN, if after all that, they either choose not to read any of it, or do and then leave, I wouldn’t worry about it - bc you did your due diligence, so what more could you possibly do? And if you think of something, then yeah do that, but beyond that, it really is up to them to be willing to try new things.

The posts promoting Lemmy/Piefed only stay on /r/RedditAlternatives for so long. If at some point in time someone is looking for an alternative, goes to the sub, and sees nothing except 1-person project that will shut down in a month, then they can’t find us, and we can’t fault them for that.
That’s why I suggested to combine communities together. Although PieFed already does that. Movies & TV seems quite active, and offers the best of both worlds not having to search for communities and also if someone is interested in seeing still more of a certain type of post then they can subscribe to the actual community - rather than the Feed - and see those in their Subscribed section.
No we wouldn’t fault them for leaving for that reason, but seeing how empty Lemmy can be (a fault that PieFed does not really suffer from, at least nowhere nearly to the same degree) is a different reason altogether than “it’s too complicated”.

The issue wasn’t new joiners finding the place empty, the issue is them not even having a look at it’s too complicated.
If you can get the house key in the first place. Setup an alt account to troubleshoot a thing, took me SEVEN fucking tries.
Can’t speak for the rest, but Lemmy on a vanilla PC and Firefox is a pain in the ass. Intermittent glitches, permanent issues, outages, I can go on and on. Most people simply won’t put up with it.
