Gehört wird in den letzten paar Wochen viel Underscores{Hyperpop} und Astrophysics, TAK, Deco*27 {Vocaloid}

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Is it wrong of me not giving a shit when cops get killed? They signed up for the job know what it entails. Same with Firepeople. I feel bad 4 families but no one gives a shit about Nurses or DRs?
62·9 days agoEither the robbery is severe enough for the person who was robbed to assemble a little group to catch the robber or they just let it slide. If we know some info about the robber we could let any institutions in the surrounding area know that this person is to be exiled or at least that his missteps be brought up before he is again considered to be part of polite society.
Local neighbourhood watch /militias could also exist and take over some of the polices current work especially when it comes to groups of potentially violent perpetrators.
None of this is going to be particularly effective but it’s not like currently a robbery, or most other crimes are likely to be effectively prosecuted either so I don’t see the big issue.
There are more watertight arguments made by anarchists, syndicalists and the like that you could read and agree or disagree with. But at the end of the day there is little ability for either of us to demonstrate, to me that the police can be fixed with any proposed method, and to you that society without police would work/ be more fair. So ultimately we are not gonna get much further here.

132·9 days agoCops are a few hundert years old concept why would they be necessary now when most places they barely existed pre ww1.
Your second paragraph is just as pie in the sky as abolishing, specifically because as with every position entailing power over others, authoritarians will flock to it.
The police was created so that wealth and power can effectively use part of the state for physical protection of their assets and lives, and that is still their operating background, the management of the local meat packing factory or the amazon warehouse will have much greater access to police resources than you or your plumber, by design, the law is imperfect and cops are not doing their job, more or less on purpose. And this status quo will not change unless at least some part of this system is entirely redone.
If the greater context in which the police exists, makes normal people scared of consequences, and powerful people immune to consequences enacted by police, why should any normal person argue for their existence.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Would the United States actually risk a Tiananmen Square incident?
12·2 months agoWell they certainly could go much much worse. The regime and their base are so far from anything being based in reality I don’t think anyone can truly be certain where this will go.
And you can just read about early ish days fascism in Germany and see how that meshes with this Regime and it’s historical context. In no particular order :
- Legislature ineffective and captured/ aligned
- Judiciary captured /placed
- Executive controlled (by proxy)
- Intimidation / Terror Squad
- Industry leaders largely aligned
- Populous tired and under economical hardship
- Extreme militarization
- Strong and largely aligned surveillance system
- Scapegoating / internal Enemy phantasms
- History of ineffective Governance / Corruption
- Generally unrepresentative and unstable Political System
- Moderate / Ineffective International push-back
- Unpredictable and Hostile foreign Policy
There are also lines that haven’t been crossed yet but there are not a lot before we get to the really Bad ones. So yes Large scale incarceration and killing against internal resistance, or simply against the ‘racialized other’ are maybe already the next steps if MAGA(and the reaction to it) keeps on this trek.
There could be some kind of thing to fan the flames and lead into the big Bads including probably some external War as well.
Or there could be circumstances that stop this insanity before we get there. But holy hell Americans are way to chill about all of this currently and MAGA certainly won’t stop until they are made to stumble and fall. Could be self inflicted of course but if the pressure is higher the chance of a fumble goes way up. So every resistance is worth the attempt at this point, and if the ship can still be pulled around there have to be real consequences otherwise it’s just gonna be this again on a few decade cycle. I mean this shit is already worrying over here and in Germany well we seem to rhyme politically with the US of ten or so years ago so …
For me this certainly is Fascist and we all should know how that goes if it truly gets to go.

3·4 months agoI think Anna’s archive actually has a bounty on that or at least a very related task.
So if you’ve found a way to economically scrape the street view 360° pictures definitely let them know. As far as I understand if you can prove you have a working method for scraping they will do what they can in terms of infrastructure and such to get it done.
The gitlab on which this is explained is down for me atm.
I live in a city that offers nearly any type of service/shop local to me so nowadays I’ll likely use them here unless what I’m searching for is overly specific.
My mom recently took me to a store selling minerals and fossils, which while not my scene, is quite an interesting place to just walk through.
Realistically I should probably get some of my food from a farming coop but my volume is so low and the supermarket is right in front of my door, to make that the main exception.
Prices sometimes are higher but typically not egregiously so, and for some things i find it within myself to pay that higher price.
Joining a University or perhaps just a university Library might be the most straightforward way to gain access although idk if i had ISO definitely remember having access to DIN though.
Some do come up on Annas archive though.
Nah im not gonna carry a liter of foam around to cut a 10^-5 chance in third, you do you of course, but this risk is small enough and the inconvenience of carrying around a helmet is large enogh for me to not care for cycling as transportation.
I find the fear mongering around this topic to be supremely annoying. Just let adults ride their bikes however they want. If you try to get your child, employee, or participants in a sporting event to wear a helmet, that’s completely reasonable. But assuming the vast majority of dutch cyclists to be idiots for cycling without a helmet is just asinine.
Everyone seeing cycling as a normal mode of transport is never gonna work if everyone is scared of cycling to the point of never considering it without a helmet. Mandatory helmet laws seem to be one of the most effective measures to discourage cycling, so don’t try to make a bike culture that effectively acts like one.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Why is bicycle riding so controversial in America?
2·5 months agoWhy should my half hour be worth less than your minute or 2 until you can safely overtake.
Not to mention that if their bike commute allows them to take a car of the road, you might be faster on average you just think that the bike makes you slower. Plus the 1000s of dollars in just waste if they would need to own a car instead and so on …
You know what’s super convenient for you(r group) but super inconvenient for everyone else, car centric infrastructure development.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Why is bicycle riding so controversial in America?
12·5 months agoThere’s a big difference in that type of cyclist and someone that’s riding a bike in street clothes for a commute. And it doesn’t make sense to act like they’re the same.
No there isn’t at least not a large one, cycling costume or not has almost no bearing on whether the ride is for recreation/fitness or for getting from a to b, often both are combined. If you had a 30km commute on a bike you’d also try to wear clothes that make it easier to get there quickly and you would use the most direct route and this is what most cyclists are doing when people get annoyed by them.
Plenty of people are doing their commute as their training ride because it makes sense to do so, why should they have to drive their car half an hour and do an hour of cardio instead of their hour cycle commute, just so you can arrive a minute early come on.

6·5 months agoTbf their state was changed / weakened/ worsened/remade by British Soviet and US meddling.
Like blaming a child for not having their shit together when the parents are using them as a pawn in their divorce battle.
Perhaps accurate but lacking all nuance.
You both are talking past each other.
The coffee Drinks/ preparations that still define coffee today are not significantly changed by the US outside of the context of US chains, they largely are of Italian origin with some other countries preparations included and some re-popularized recently under the banner of 3rd wave coffee.
Third Wave Coffee definitely does exist and is significant change in coffee culture that was sparked probably in the US, but it largely is concerned not with drink preparation and selection but with coffee growing and roasting, moving from blended and darker roasted to single origin (traceable) and lighter roasted coffee. This change being sparked in the US, does not make the phenomenon US specific, much like Hippie culture was US lead it still was a global thing like third wave Coffee is as well.
does not exist in Europe. At least not outside of Starbucks or maybe McDonalds. The Italians still drink the same espresso from Lavazza or illy as they always did, the German still buy their filter coffee from Jacobs and Tchibo, just like in the 1960s.
This is not true, Europe is as much of a leader in third wave Coffee as the US and Australia, but the people drinking and selling Lavazza or Tchibo are the the same people (or their kids) as the people drinking it in the 60s, a different smaller demographic: smaller roasters, young people and people interested in coffee; have largely embraced third wave coffee globally.
I can find a third wave coffee place in every German city >200k pop, often even a roaster, and all international cities > 1M pop will have at least 10 different such shops. People that aren’t plugged into the culture of third wave will not recognize these shops as significantly different to other places serving coffee first. Much like a person might not recognize differences in craft beer or specific nuances among teas if they are unfamiliar with the space. This does not mean these differences don’t exist.
Third wave even though it was arguably started/inspired around Starbucks, is nowadays as opposed to the Starbucks way of doing coffee as it is opposed to the other large corporate incumbents including Tchibo Nestle and such. Fair trade although nowadays largely rejected by third wave for direct import relationships, is in some ways 2nd/3rd wave adjacent, as both argue and act for more equitable trade as well as pro social and pro environmental production.
So even though third wave can be expensive and probably originates in the US, this does not invalidate the concept for the rest of the world. To me third wave is good coffee with legacy European small roasters, German/Italian Eiskaffe, Nordic Filter, French and Austrian Coffeehouse being fine to good and everything else being sorta bad but still coffee. Every time I’ve taken my parents to a third wave place they’ve liked it at least as much but often more than my second category which is where their platonic ideal probably was, but they don’t search out for them like me because they’ve formed their coffee habits 3+ decades ago when 3rd wave wasn’t a thing. The better traditional Coffee places in Germany have moved in the direction of third wave as their premium/local legacy roasters have moved in this direction.
And don’t get me started on the “third wave”, a marketing term coined by some hipsters in Los Angeles or New York to sell overpriced “specialty” coffee to other hipsters from San Francisco or Boston.
Of course specialty and 3rd wave are marketing terms, but there is real and good Praxis behind them which imo. makes for better tasting coffee and maybe a better coffee industry.
The price hit is significant with beans costing 2+ times as much as legacy roasters, but for prepared coffee there is essentially no difference in price. The differences here are more explained by (foot traffic customers)/(commercial rent) where it is served than anything else, you can get coffee that is cheaper but just barely. Almost nowhere will serve anything under 2€, and specialty espresso/batch filter are typically under 3€ (Germany).
