Różnica między federacją a konfederacją jest dość zasadnicza.
W federacji zachodzi permanentna delegacja niektórych uprawnień od sfederowanych podmiotów do stałych organów federacji. Oznacza to, że podmiot, na czas uczestnictwa w federacji zrzeka się – w ustalonym zakresie – swojej suwerenności. W tym zakresie zwierzchnictwo należy do organów federalnych, a podmioty sfederowane są wobec nich odpowiedzialne.
W konfederacji natomiast delegacja uprawnień ma charakter wykonawczy, zwierzchnictwo pozostaje przy podmiotach skonfederowanych, a organa konfederacji są wobec nich odpowiedzialne.
Obecnie najbardziej powszechnie znaną federacją są Stany Zjednoczone Ameryki Północnej, a konfederacją – Organizacja Narodów Zjednoczonych

The difference between a federation and a confederation is quite fundamental.
In a federation, there is a permanent delegation of certain powers from the federated entities to the permanent organs of the federation. This means that the entity, for the duration of its participation in the federation, relinquishes its sovereignty to a predefined extent. To this extent, sovereignty is vested in the federal bodies, and the federated entities are responsible to them.
In a confederation, on the other hand, the delegation of powers is technical in nature, sovereignty remains with the confederated entities, and the organs of the confederation are responsible to them.
Currently, the most commonly known federation is the United States of America, and the most commonly known confederation is the United Nations Organisation.
