He’s fucking American, I genuinely don’t even understand their issue with him is. I get that it’s just racism but how do they rationalise it without admitting its just racism? What are their talking points because it makes no sense

I totally get that but usually they have some talking point to avoid directly admitting that

Yes, but many Americans don’t know that. The name is Spanish. Hell, so many Americans don’t realize that New Mexico is a state in their own country.

And it wasn’t until the U.S. invaded Mexico and forced it to cede large swaths of its territory. Same with California, Arizona, Nevada, etc.

Puerto Rico didn’t exactly beg to be annexed, either.

I think a lot of this panic about Latin American people illegally taking over the United States stems from repressed colonial guilt.

It’s more based on fear, since the US Latin population seem to be maintaining a healthy birth rate, while the white people seem to have either lost wood, can’t find the right hole, or have 'nads packed with PFAS. In some US states, whites are already a minority, and the various schemes to impose minority rule are unstable and require increasing effort as demographics keep on shifting.

This is just the mask-off, “We don’t care that he’s a US citizen…he’s not white”, kind of racism. They aren’t even pretending that there’s more to it at this point.

That’s nice but also very naive…

Gotta remember to always quote what I’m replying to so when folks edit their comment I’m not out here looking like an asshole…¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Not the end of the world - it’s just a few downvotes on Lemmy…

Maybe if comment clarifies your perspective or whatever, reply instead of editing?

Normally I’d put it under an “edit:” but I thought I was quick enough this time that I wouldn’t need to haha

I literally just edited another comment and thought about this exchange and how that would probably work too.

They can if they move to a state and register there. It is kinda weird that they could then move to another country and vote as an ex-pat but not if they move back to PR.
