Just what the title says. There is one of interest I’d like to take, given the level of inactivity.

A while back hexbear got into a bidding war over their own domain because somebody forgot to pay the bill.

    Depends on the instance.

Easy if you just want a community; I did it for !eldenring@lemmy.world by just messaging the admins because the og mod just parked it and fucked off.

For the whole instance you’d have to snipe the domain name or make some kind of deal with the current owner(s). From what I have heard, the software itself is tied to a domain name, so even migrating to a new domain is kinda fucky. Let alone taking over an instance that exists but is abandoned.

A instance runs on a server which has to be played and has a domain associated with it which also needs to be played.

So the owner would need to transfer all files to you and the domain so you can host it.

If that instance doesn’t host popular communities or hosts a lot of users it’s just much easier to create a new instance.

To be fair, you don’t need the domain, you could just have them change the host record. But it would sure be safer for the instance if you controlled the entire domain.
