I’ve lived in apartments with 12” solid cement walls where I never heard a neighbor, had a washer/dryer in the unit I could use whenever I wanted for free, could take a few steps down the hall to throw out garbage, and I’ve never lived in a place where the elevator smelled like piss. I have had to park in some parking garages that smelled like piss, but I’ve also had apartments with an attached garage.

All the things you mention are design issues and not living in a place that caters to the type of person that pisses in elevators.

These features will make an apartment cost more, but they exist and don’t require a house.

I know people who own a house who can hear their neighbors, drive their trash to work to throw it out, have to worry about additional maintenance and upkeep costs, and don’t have much flexibility when life circumstances change.

House and apartments baths have their pros and cons. Most of the apartment cons can be solved with better design.

Exactly. My main reasons why I want a home instead of an apartment is the lack of space, the need to have some private space outside (i.e. a courtyard) and privacy. A lower density apartment building that has all these things could be built, but it would probably be a luxury apartment that would cost an obscene amount of money.

It depends where you’re at. I had an apartment that was basically like a little house (connected to a few others). 1 floor, so no one above me, private entrance, a little outdoor patio area with a privacy fence, a full sized washer/dryer, at the time it had just been redone so everything was brand new (I got to peel the plastic off the washer/dryer. It had a dishwasher as well, and the dedicated laundry room actually provided a good amount of storage space. It looks like the place is currently somewhere around $1,100 to $1,300. $1,450 for 2 bed, 2 bath. It had a lot of the nice features, but wasn’t a “luxury” place with over the top amenities that no one uses, but leads to triple the rent price. When I was there around 8 years ago I think I paid around $850. I see a review that says rent will go up about $35/year, which seems about in line with what I’m seeing.
