Blu-Ray diodes were not cheap, either, and the format was still competing with HD-DVD. A Blu-Ray player in 2006 cost more than a PS3
The original PS3 models also had an Emotion Engine onboard for backward compatibility with PS2 games, which was later replaced with much cheaper software emulation.
