Don’t criticize Linux
I know we’ve said it before but THIS year is definitely going to be the year of desktop Linux!
Most people already have several Linux machine in their home. I wouldn’t be surprised that Linux has already thc malority of consumer device.
Just Desktop aren’t but smartphone, routers, and tons of smart shit are Linux based
Yup. Not counting my two PCs that both run Linux, I have:
- LG Smart TV - webOS is Linux
- Android phone and tablet
- Chromecast - pretty sure it’s Linux
- Steam Deck - SteamOS is Linux
And that’s just the ones I know about. I wouldn’t be surprised if our cars, refrigerator, washing machine, etc all ran Linux inside. In fact, the only devices we have that I know don’t run Linux (and have a real OS) are:
- wife’s iPhone
- wife’s iPad
- wife’s PC - Windows
- my work computer - macOS
- Switch - FreeBSD
But 4/5 of those are still *nix.
Linux needs still needs more THC malority, IMO.
And if you do, you better run!
The points are made up and votes don’t matter.
They matter in that particular post. Other than that, no, they don’t.
Its not reddit by all what that means.
Welcome!
Simultaneously good and bad. IMO, more good than bad.
Every time there’s a vague reference to a car, you need to lose your everloving mind at the pure evil it represents.
is it this?
Hell yeah ill check you out 🙃
Whoops i thought it was the other one lol
Hey, welcome, glad to have you here!
The one difference to keep in mind is that each community (the subreddit equivalent) and each server (the equivalent of a ‘site’ like Reddit) have their own sets of rules and mods. So when you post to a server that’s not your home, just be aware you are subject to those sets of rules in addition to your home server. You should be fine for the most part if you act with empathy and respect, but no need to take it too hard if a mod informs you that you broke a rule.
Lastly, don’t be afraid to post/comment in niche communities with a small amount of activity, but it’s a good idea to do a community search (under “All” filter) to check if a more active community is present on another server.
Have fun, I’ll see you around!
Welcome!
Lemmy instances are in the middle of transitioning to a new version (0.19.x). It’s been a bit bumpy. You might notice some changes once this instance upgrades. We’ve been holding back until we’re confident that the new version is stable.
If you need to contact the admins you can message us directly. Or, for a faster response, get into our instance’s Matrix chat: https://matrix.to/#/#sh.itjust.works:matrix.org
lemm.ee was in a rough spot in the couple weeks after their version update, but they got it figured out and it’s been good since. Maybe this is me being naive but most of the major instances should have that behind them by now I think
Yes. The most important thing to know is that when life hands you a Lemmy, make Lemmyonade.
You should know there are multiple free clients you can use to view content in Lemmy. Try a few and select one you like. I recommend using one that provides the ability to block specific instances, communities, and users. It will improve your experience and reduce frustrations.
What are some good ones?

Good ones are tagged as “Hot”
Connect does all that (Android) Free, no ads, frequent updates; dev support via buy-me-a-coffee thingy.
Voyager is nice if you used apollo with reddit
Boost is my preference
Nope.
First things first, have you watched Star Trek and which Linux distro do you run?
- No is it good? 2. I’m still stuck on MacOS :( might try asahi Linux if I have some time though.
-
If it annoys you, you can filter it out by keywords. I use this to block anything “Musk” for instance.
-
Asahi is GREAT and the install process a breeze ; Coming ftom macos I suggest you select Fedora-Gnome rather than the default KDE desktop.
-
For your carriage return to work, you need to leave a full blank line between your chapters.
I have actually tried fedora in a VM! Just don’t have enough space… it would be my go-to distro though.

A lot of Star Trek is quite good. If you watch TNG, start from season 2.
-
Several distros work absolutely fantastic on older Intel-based Macs; Mint has a knack for breathing new life into old hardware. Can’t speak from experience about the ARM-based Macs.

Drop in to !newToLemmy@lemmy.ca to say hi or ask questions :)
You can do that at any time
Welcome!
List of communities you see from your instance is just the ones subscribed to by an existing user. You may still find a niche one and have to be the first to manually subscribe.
