There are directories like https://lemmyverse.net/communities but it’s not straightforward for new users to simply click on a community to join Are there any clients that have this onboarding workflow implemented well?
Trending Communities [
feddit.nl
] gives a list of communities that have had increasing activity for the past week. It’s helpful for a quick overview of possible communities with active discussion, stats too.
This one let’s you choose the instance you are in so it makes the links open direct in that instance
Lemmyverse does too, top right home icon
If you have the patience letting the drip of communities surface through your instances ‘all’ feed has been a good way to take in the growth.
I have an account I don’t normally comment from I leave all the memes unblocked for killing time, otherwise it’s been a lot of negative filtering and following interesting comments.
If you’re self hosting that’s a different problem.
Note that only communities someone on your instance has already subscribed to will appear in your “all” feed
On Lemmyverse, there is the option to set your home instance (top right home icon), then the links open on your instance
this is the best way, and people (including me) not notice it from the start.
should be a bigger button
Probably, something to bring up to the owners of the page I guess
https://github.com/maltfield/awesome-lemmy-instances great list of instances to help you pick
Sub rehab is very useful for finding subreddit alternative communities on the fediverse https://sub.rehab/
Search on https://lemmyverse.net/communities
Thanks, is there a way to subscribe directly from that directory?
You can set your home instance in the settings. Then at least the links open the communities in your instance.
Avoids copying and pasting and manually searching at least.
Very useful, thanks
You’re very welcome
Not that I’m aware. I just type or paste sub@site.whatever into my Memmy search box and it pops up there.
I noticed they also removed lemmy.world from lemmyverse.net so it isn’t a very useful site anymore.
Edit: At the moment.
It’s been temporarily removed due to API issues
I just noticed it was removed from lemmyverse too. For us non-experts, what do you mean by “API issues”?
Lemmy world has been having capacity issues recently
The API is basically a means to link external services and apps (and bots) to lemmys backend. In this case of what counts for API issues, is that all lemmy instances have a hidden web page that broadcasts its currently created community feed as well as other data too. The creator of lemmyverse.net (I’m a friend of his, he’s super nice) has a bot that goes to each lemmy instance it can and finds that hidden page and compiles the data it can find. For whatever reason, right now lemmy.worlds just doesn’t compile properly as it will scan the first 1-98 page of communities off that page. But since there’s ~9k communities that lemmy.world has, it should actually be around 180 pages. And once it hits that final page, it just flips out since it can’t find more and it starts to cause issues with lemmyverse.net entirely and its ability to display other instances. It was disabled temporarily, but will likely be reinstated as things improve. There’s suspicion it has to do with the DDOS attacks lemmy.world is experiencing, but we aren’t sure and it’s understandable why they won’t clarify if it is or not since going fully into detail how they are being DDOSed breaks ethical disclosure.
https://lemmy.world/api/v3/community/list?limit=50&page=1220000&type_=Local&show_nsfw=true <- this is specific link that sniffs out on each instance, it’s very broken right now.
Thank you for that very detailed explanation.
Sorry, I can get a little overboard with explaining this stuff 😂
If you use the voyager app they have an option to migrate subreddits using your multireddit. It basically parses the multireddit and allows you to quickly search for communities that match your old subs. It gives you directions to do it. I found it very helpful.
Look at which communities are popular or search for your interests.
