The joke is that the first part of the post suggests that the news would be that the reader is trans. The expectation is subverted with another piece of news that is really cool. There might be a deeper layer about how trans people might suppress the realization that they’re trans by distracting themselves, but I don’t really know.
It’s a classic anti-joke. You set up for a joke punchline, then you say something that isn’t the expected joke, and usually isn’t even funny. The thing that makes people laugh is that they were expecting a joke and then it isn’t one.
This particular one really probably only works if you hang out in certain types of online trans spaces, because otherwise you won’t recognize the setup.
Even more explanation, spoilered for easier scrolling:
The joke this anti-joke is riffing on is actually also kind of meta, now that I think about it.
Ok, so, if you think you’re a boy, but you play as a girl in video games, have a fascination with feminine clothing, and “wish you were a girl”, then you might be, in fact, not a boy, you might be trans.
The joke then, is how often the above statement gets bandied about in trans spaces. It’s a true statement, almost self-evidently so, and yet, if you’re an egg (which in this context means a person who is trans but doesn’t know it yet), you sometimes don’t realize you’re trans until/unless you see this statement somewhere and then start thinking about it. So people in trans spaces, especially spaces where there are a lot of eggs for whatever reason, will post this kind of sentiment constantly. It’s kind of funny how often.
So here we are with the original anti-joke this whole thread has been about: the person on twitter starts the sentence that always ends with “you might be trans”, but then actually posts a pretty neat news article, and since you’re expecting “you might be trans” and get instead “neat underground forest found in China”, then if you’re me, you chuckle a little, because it’s pretty funny.
“I have some news for you” is a facetious way that people sometimes imply someone might be trans. But the joke is that the “news” is a literal news story. Maybe with the added twist that it’s a subject that’s nerdy in a way that fits with stereotypes of trans people. Not sure about the last part though.
i dont get what the first part has to do with the second part of her tweet
I can see why lemm.ee is shutting down.
Hey to be fair I’m a hexbearian and I don’t get the joke either

It’s a bait and switch joke.

PLEASE normalize explaining things. we cant all be on the internet 24/7 🙏🏻
The first part is a common implication that the person might be trans, but then switches it up to talking about something completely different.
so youre saying theres no joke here. its just… switching the topic randomly… alright

It’s inverting the reader’s expectations in an amusing manner
