For YouTube, there’s a separate (super terrible, barely functioning) YouTube Kids app that filters out non-kid-friendly content and only shows videos suitable for children.
Do you think PeerTube should have something similar — either officially made by Framasoft, or created by a third-party — that’s PURELY for kids’ content?
It could help parents and educators safely guide kids toward age-appropriate videos, while still being part of the Fediverse.
But it might also fragment the user base or require a lot of moderation work.
What do you think — would this be a good, or bad, idea for PeerTube?
I think it might make more sense to have a child friendly instance, that is heavily moderated, and only federates with selected instances. I’m not sure how an automatic filter would be able to reliably block inappropriate content.
This is a great point! Easier to separate the instance
Yes! I’ve started a Peertube Index, ptindex.btfree.org, and was planning to eventually do the same for kids. However, I don’t know of any children specific instances atm to even begin one. I’ve thought of starting a children’s instance but there’s barely any request for regular Peertube atm. Also on my very long todo list is a Sepiasearch that’s moderated and eventually a child friendly one.
At least a filter. Cause there’s some strange stuff on there sometimes lol.
It seems like it would be easier to create a toggle setting in PeerTube?
I love this idea. I gave up on YT Kids because the default allow was too difficult to lock down.
I’m just curious, would teenagers be included in the (hypothetical) PeerTube Kids app, or should there potentially be (hypothetically) another third-party app, but called something like PeerTube Teens, or something similar?
