Rim brakes are often good enough. No need for them to “die”.
I can attest that Rim Brakes in several inches of snow or freezing rain become a problem. Ice builds up on the rim, and you have trouble braking, so you have to drag the brakes every once in a while so the leading edge can knock the accumulation off. A disk brake is up out of the elements and fare better.
I live in snow country, and you wouldn’t catch me on a bike between November and April. That said I’ve never had a disc break and would like to try it.

I’m over fifty. I only ride for fun, and riding in snow and ice isn’t my idea of fun. I’d rather cross country ski in that case — but I’d really rather just be on a beach vacation in the Caribbean.
But I don’t want to sound like I’m poo-pooing the idea, either. I haven’t had a bike in over fifteen years, but I really want to start riding again. I miss it. It’s the only exercise besides swimming that I really enjoy. I don’t mean to be dismissive about how anyone enjoys riding.
Rim brakes are easier to maintain, cheaper, and lighter that disc brakes.
Both have their pros and cons, but disc brakes can be a hassle to take care of (bent rotors because of people not being careful when they park their bike next to yours), parts contamination, hydraulic brakes have their own issues.
My only complaint about rim brakes is that rims are expensive to replace, so riding in the winter can get expensive if you aren’t on top of keeping things clean.
Stopping power can be excellent on rim brakes, just don’t use shitty pads.
rotors are cheap. replacing an entire rim after burning it through not so much. That’s the only reason I personally need to use disc, but I also just much prefer the feel of hydraulic disc brakes. Also I’m especially astounded by carbon rims with rim brakes.
Modern pads with modern carbon rims work fine
I have one converted ebike with rim brake and one mtb with disc brake(cable), and honestly while rim brake never give me much issue, but after having to replace both rim due to wearing out(with one almost blown out on me mid ride), i’d say disc brake is significantly better in a way it’s no hassle and easy to maintain and adjust. Other than that i don’t feels like one have any advantage on braking over the other, both brake really well. I can see a lot of really low budget bike still come with rim brake and it doesn’t really matter.
We need wireless rim brakes.
