Becoming a GM is one of those things where you not only have to be naturally predisposed to that skillset, but also spend every waking moment from childhood to adulthood thinking about Chess to get there. So it sort of selects for a type of rich, privileged, extremely determined person who doesn’t know anything about the world outside of 64 black and white squares.

I think it’s nearly impossible to dedicate your life to a game that’s culturally synonymous with smartness without ending up pretty cocky when it turns out you’re the best at it lol

In a way this is why chess is still segregated. The women didn’t want to put up with the dickhead men.

The only good chess GM I know about is Botvinnik.
