EU5 actually looks like a complete game from what I’ve seen compared to CK3 and Vic3 at launch.
I’ll wait for a month or two before getting it so that they can patch the bugs.
Of what I gather from reviewers and people on discord:
- Buggy and unpolished even by standards of PDS line-up
- Less gamey and arcadey but inversely also more complicated and harder to get into than EU4
- Optimization could be better
- A LOT of content to work with
- Satisfying gameplay loop once you work it out
- Good historical value
I look forward to see how this game develops but yeah, not ready to drop 60 on it now.
On a complete side note, I’m curious if they released the complete unit renders for different cultures and periods.
Piracy is free

That’s usually my response to everything from PDX. Can’t justify spending money on something so universally loved and used by fascists, do enjoy CK lampshading monarchies and the whole PDX Rule 34 - “there is a Cold War setting mod for that game. If there isn’t one yet, there is one in development. If it’s too early in the timeline to make a Cold War mod work, a primitive communism mod, either alone or as part of an After the End style setting shift, will appear instead” - it’s so fun.
There are a fuckton of Communists who play paradox games. When I played hoi4 I knew a bunch of people who exclusively played the Soviet Union.
Yeah, I know that. The number of outspoken communists who play specifically the ones where you can’t even implement socialism, is weirdly high. That probably explains the Paradox Rule 34.
HOI4 makes a lot more sense. Eh, I could never get into it myself, though. Only ever playing as the Soviets seems a little silly to me, though. Ahistorical leftist paths are half the fun. And if you think the vanilla ones suck? Less terrible leftist paths are a dime a dozen on the Steam Workshop or anywhere else HOI4 mods are hosted, lol. I know at least that much.

It’s more of a competitive hoi4 thing. People just choose one country and run with it forever.
Ah, I’ve seen that in that context. I can see the reasoning. But yeah, probably says something about your politics if you pick certain countries for that.
if it’s buggy then i guess i have to wait before i destroy my life with another paradox game
Oh, tell me about it. Those games are horrible for your time management. My main digital poison of choice that ate up hours on end in high school when I did not have hours to waste, wasn’t even a Paradox title, but, they are just as bad as the strategy/resource management game that stole my teenage years.
On a complete side note, I’m curious if they released the complete unit renders for different cultures and periods.
from what i saw in previews there’s like 4 or 5 visual cultures and they all have pretty extensive variation, like depending on unit types and chronology. still not what i’d consider adequate and i hope to wait for a mod or dlcs, gotta have some “middle east” and “east asian” variation
There are seven cultures but there aren’t separate South American/Andean, Eastern European or South East Asian types, so it’s going to be weird seeing the armies of the Sapa Inka dress up as Mexica jaguar warriors, Muscovite streltsy looking like Westerners two centuries ahead of Peter’s reforms and Dai Viet troops wearing Indian or Chinese get-ups (to say nothing of Africans like Malians, Ethiopians and Zimbabweans being stuffed into one big blob like base game EU4).
That said, I absolutely love the system as shown and want to see how much it can grow, especially since EU4 started so bare-bones. Entire formations of units, all varied and depending on level of professionalization, as opposed to just four different dudes pertaining to tech level is certainly an upgrade.
Graphical representation is a minor thing in a map game of course but it goes a long way to add flavor when you stare at the map for hours on end.
I know many paradox players seem to not give a shit but I really like having visuals beyond the map color and flag to latch onto too. It’s a matter of immersion and authenticity that I’m taken out of if i see wildly wrong sprites of units or buildings. hopefully these aspects will be easy for modders to work with
I got it installed and I got a bunch of free days coming in. Will make a new thread after I played it a little bit. ( I like most what I saw though)
new agar.io dropped
