My personal conspiracy theory is that the gluten free craze a couple years back, where they tried convincing everyone regardless of Celiac status to go gluten free for their “health,” was the meat and/or diary industry feeling threatened by seitan being a thing and trying to paint it as evil and nip any ideas of it being someone’s actual primary protein source in the bud.

Same with the “soy makes men grow boobs and become feminine” thing.

Can’t have people realizing that plants are also a source of protein and have been throughout human history. Gotta keep up the illusion that animals and protein are synonyms.

i wonder how we will deal with them once we are big enough for them to come though.

Since it’s the fediverse and each instance makes its own rules, one option would be to have instances that do some kind of real-human verification when accounts are set up.

how would we deal with bot posts being federated in though? i don’t think blocking entire instances is a good solution unless they get particularly crowded with them. a lot of them being used for vote manupulation and propaganda on reddit are legit accounts bought or hacked too.

Im no expert so maybe this is not true but I believe we could make an instance that requires real human verification to join.

Vegan bashing has always been significantly more cringe than anything vegans actually say. This news certainly entrenches it.

Most major industries are doing this to discredit their opposition. You’ve simply gotta think for yourself and assume most of whats out there is bullshit.

This piece evokes in me vacillating layers of frustration, amusement, and admiration.

The whistleblower has chosen to stay anonymous and says they signed a Non-Disclosure Agreement, so they can’t reveal the company’s name. This means there’s no way to to independently verify whether the story is true.

    The whistleblower themselves reminded readers:

“You don’t know if I’m telling the truth. That’s part of my point. Be skeptical of everything online and consider sources. Are they credible? You have every right to be skeptical of me. If you are skeptical of me, and others, then I have done my service in making people smarter and better protected from scams and frauds.”

I have my suspicions that this was well-crafted agitprop by one or more clever vegans, but I’ll never really know. I’d think that the work would have been farmed out to somewhere for less pay. But online disinformation campaigns absolutely are real, and the tactics they claim were used sound very in-line with corporate disinformation tactics, and we’ve all heard them used before. It’s some of the same tactics that carnists will use without anyone paying them, because they have their own intrinsic motivations to disparage veganism.

In the end it doesn’t much matter whether the story is true because it may as well be true. It went viral on a vegan blog and not some corporate media body with a reputation to protect (though honestly their reputations are already shot).

that’s very plausible. veganism has an outsized hate going for it i don’t really understand, even as someone who is not.

anyone who disagrees with you is a paid shill?

        …k.

Now, do I believe the meat industry would pay shills to creepily back their interests in social media, though? absofuckinglutely. $17/hr is cheap for that kind of pr. fuck that shady shit. …and fuck the commercial meat industry.

…but don’t lie to yourself and others that everyone who disagrees with you is a corporate whore.

I didn’t remove anything, I don’t even remember who the guy was.

I didn’t actually think they were actually paid I just wanted to say that posting something like that under this post raises a little suspicion you know?

exCUSE me?? That is not “disagreement.” Fuck that noise. That is character assassination. It’s bad faith copium from someone who is unwilling to process their own feelings. We don’t owe abuse like that ANYTHING and fuck off with your equivocation. Seriously, though.
