        I read somewhere (but have no verification of this fact to offer) that the person in the picture isn’t even the one doing this and it’s a weird stalker / revenge situation going on here.

          I guess that’s possible, but it seems like a very strange way to do it.

          I think more likely it’s a test of the resilience of the fediverse in preparation for a more valuable scam later, using whatever footage the person could get (not necessarily themselves, but not stalker or revenge, either).

          According to a thread I read the other day, the Peertube stream the message links to is just a video of her on a loop. I don’t think the person in the photo is the one doing this, it’s either revenge porn or a scammer who just happened to use this pic and video.

    At least “she” is 29.

    Not that I support porn bots, but I keep getting messaged by spammers pretending to be teenagers and it’s turning my stomach.

    Is there something that can be done across Lemmy to prevent mass spammers? Surprised nobody used this before. Got messaged twice so far.

      i guess it’s a case of each instance admin whacking these moles as they pop up. also having anti bot signup defenses.

      I’m guessing there’s also stuff that could be done server side to stop single accounts sending the same message to > 100 people or something like that. not sure if that’s already implemented though.

      One defense could be for an instance admin to set a maximum number of messages someone can send to different accounts on their instance per hour.

      This would be a heuristic approach to combat spam but this function would first have to be implemented by the Lemmy developers.

        honestly it always astounds me that developers don’t pre-emptively add ratelimiting, it’s such a basic thing to prevent misuse

      Report them too, so the resp. instance can deal with the account and connected accounts.
