The mods at r/popculture pointed it out. And then the screenshot above.
The subreddit drama
Just nuked my entire reddit account due to this blatant censorship. Hello Lemmy and lemm.ee it’s nice to be here
Me too.
Welcome you two! We’ve got Star Trek, Linux and beans!
…
Hopefully some other topics will become viable later.
That’s why I’m here. Reddit started getting super censored so I was looking for an alternative and was directed here. It’s fucking ridiculous.
Same. I originally came here after they killed off 3rd party apps, then I figured out how to patch RiF again and didn’t spend as much time here.
The propaganda and misinformation have gotten to be too much. Advice subs are all fake AI stories. Admins are making a fuss about people breaking the rules, but refuse to disclose what the rules actually are.
I really enjoy Lemmy. The downside is that it’s not as easy to organize (and find) niche spaces like on reddit. I’m hoping the small communities have grown more since the first mass migration.
theres some niche subs that likely wont be replicated here anytime soon.
sooner, if we advertise hard on reddit and they keep this shit up. if there’s one thing kids these days are good at; it’s evading these fucking censorship systems.
I’ve been over here for a year off and on, Lemmy ain’t bad at all, could use some more resistance joining for sure.
When I first joined lemmy was ass. But it has passed the threshold for content to be useable now. I like it.
Yeah the early days weren’t so great but it’s getting there. Still wish some of the game communities I’m interested in would migrate already but it’s not bad
Well I’m happy to be that.
the immense amount of bans they came last month, ongoing since nov 5th is just made some of us come here. they are going to keep banning, or make it easier to ban until only right propaganda is left, also the increased amount of on the ability to ban people that “report other people” has also increased. you can get banned for reporting someone or reporting “too much” apparently.
Welcome to Lemmy, bud!
We have lots of Linux and Star Trek memes.
I highly recommend that when you update “all” or your “front page” - be sure to set youe filter for “Hot” results. Gets you the fresh, interesting shit.
Welcome, sibling! I came over in the rush after the reddit API debacle. Some things I’ve learned in the last year:
We may not have Sprog here yet, but get to know the environment, including colorful fauna such as:
- Cephalopods that have Colonized the Skies.
- The embodiment of the habitual movements of a space captain.
- People that are kind-of like ossified remains.
- People whose entire self identities revolve around draconic coitus (and all the controversy this brings).
The vast majority of posts are made by, like, ten people, and I’m pretty sure they never sleep. I’m currently unconvinced that Flying Squid isn’t just a full colony of Humboldt Squid, constantly ramming into a giant submerged keyboard.
As far as controversies: Avoid the “tankies”. You will find them on Hexbear, Lemmy.ml, and lemmygrad. They will not be going away, since the original creator of Lemmy is, apparently, one of them, and seems kind of mad with power. They treat with no man, and are willing to do anything to convince you that authoritarianism is good, as long as it calls itself “socialism”. One would think they would have learned their lesson from “National Socialism”… They apparently have not. Not everyone from those servers is a tankie, but most tankies are on those servers. Think of Tankies as the lemmy subspecies of those trolls you shouldn’t be feeding.
Contribute to discussions! Especially on a place as small as Lemmy, lurking actively harms the community! Unlike most places, it’s generally fairly easy to figure out who’s being disingenuous and arguing in bad faith, and most people are very reasonable! (As long as you never say anything bad about Linux. Be forewarned. Do not engage unless your autonomic nervous system runs Arch)
Welcome!
man we went from spacedicks hitting the front page to this
Reddit has gone full fascist. Wow. Never thought I’d see the day.
The cuck CEO loves Elon and is an enthusiastic meat rider.
Nothing wrong with being meat rider mate, catch on with the times.
Yes being a CEO is the bad part here!
I believe it is the fact that it’s Elon’s meat that makes it’s an issue. No one should do that.
spez does love musk and trump
I did. I left more than a year ago after I was permabanned for asking a question about whether someone would be banned if they asked certain things. Fuck those guys. I hear Digg is coming back though.
oh, reddit doesnt allow discussion of reddit ban in most cases.
You can now get in trouble for upvoting something. How absurd.
You can do that on Daily Kos too. I am permanently banned from commenting due to it. Those fuckers are too DNC oriented any way.
My ten year old Reddit account got banned for a single snarky comment about Luigi, so here I am!
i commented on R/technology and got “temp suspend for reporting too much” and that somehow triggered reddits AI to ban all my other accs.
So sad and happy at the same time. I enjoyed reddit for awhile so its sad to see it go further downhill but kinda happy cause fuck all of that shit they are trying to do.
For a brief few years we had communication platforms that could topple dictatorships but now here we are.
Yeah, now we have platforms that can topple democracies
censoring Luigi
lemmy.world mods be like: 👀
Reddit’s strategy is to replace all users with AI bots rented from Elon.
they saw how the META android zuckerberg did, use AI harvest “Dead accounts” Facebook and drive the engagement.
Come to Lemmy, we got cookies
Well that means they’re afraid. We’re not calling for anything violent we’re just calling out what we see. It’s a shame that Reddit went red. #boycottreddit
Reddit has been doing this shit for years. It’s a big reason why I left. Spez (little piggie) was only the catalyst.
A few ban-happy,power tripping moderators did come over here, though. I don’t have specifics on that, I just know I’ve seen them, and I’ve also been banned for some real dumb shit. I just stay away from those communities/instances.
I swear, there are some people that actively seek out parts of the internet to gain control of so they can push their agendas.
It’s like they get physically distressed at the idea of people discussing things they don’t want being discussed or holding views they don’t want held.
This feels somewhat different because previously, generally speaking, the problematic subreddits (jailbait, fat people hate, etc) were pretty much isolated to that subreddit, so action could be taken to that subreddit without a big blast radius to the rest of the site. Also, for the most part, the issues were targeting marginalized people. Going after people in the comments of r/popculture for upvoting a comment about Luigi is nothing like previous controversies.
They banned my old reddit account because I reported fake news that was being posted on r/conservative. Apparently subreddit mods can report users who use the report tool and can just get you banned.
They recently, meaning I don’t exactly know when it happened, gave mods the ability to report you for “Abuse of the report tool”. For the record, I’m a mod on some subreddits, and that’s an absurd thing to need. I’ve learned a few things about being a Reddit mod.
- It’s not nearly as hard as some mods make you think it is.
- If they actually experience difficulty, it’s probably cause they suck at being a mod.
- Subs that experience issues, are typically cess pools like r/conservative.
yea ive been reported for “report abuse” when the comments were legitimately trolls or obviously posting misinformation, crossbanning is also just as ridiculous. from what ive gathered, some mods are lazy into responding to every post being reported so they decided just to get rid of the reporter instead having to deal with.
I got permanently banned for pointing out that a popular sex advice subreddit was being run by a rapist…
And then they say “if a user is breaking the rules, don’t engage, use the report button.”
Which is stupid. A mod can just ban you forever and call it a day. Where the Admins have fucked up is if you harass a mod via modmail, they can only mute you for I think 28 days max, before you can start harassing them again. So, instead of letting a mod simply mute you forever, they created the report bullshit.
That’s dystopian.
So much shady shit going on on reddit.
The modlog is a breath of fresh air for lemmy. Praise whoever came up with and supported it.
I got a warning for a similar thing. They can disagree with the report, but warning/banning users for it is insane
i got hit with report abuse a couple times. there were legitimate comments that should be reported but not getting removed.
I got banned because I posted a comment on an anti vaxx sub (I was challenging one of their comments) and found out a lot of subs had ban bots that just watched who posted to subs they didn’t like. Whatever you do don’t put any thought into your mod work or look at the comment’s context.
Public moderation logs need to become the norm.
Reddit became a clownshow 2 years ago, how are people even still enjoying the place?
It’s still the only major community hub for loads of hobbies and such. As an example: the Magic the Gathering community here has 1300 members and almost no activity.
pokemon, yugioh, mtg are sitll all on Reddit. pokemon specifically the card game has direct line of communication(sort of) with the devs, it will be impossible/difficult to convince them to switch here. theres also certain companies that uses thier specific subs too.
Exactly this, compare Usenet reddit and Usenet lemmy. Lemmy has barely any activity.
It’s been limping for a while, but the momentum was huge to begin with. The niche subreddits still had good participation, not great, but good enough. These latest shenanigans might be the final tipping point, though.
the only way is if reddit starts another massive ban purge again.
there are niche subs there i vist that usually cant replicate somewhere else, and people are addicted to the news and political posts.
