Ah yes drugs are bad. Weed kills you, etc.
You find out weed doesn’t do any of the shit they said it did… Now absolutely everything they claimed is called into question. Why would they lie about X but not about Y?
DARE did more to make people learn that police cannot be trusted apart from maybe their general violent tendencies.
I may be too european, but our one prez was about hard drugs! Half of it was about was a biology lesson about the nucleus accumbens and its deterioration! The other half was safety tips, apparently you can try every hard drug once with exemption to crystal meth without causing permanent damage! I didn’t know that until then, I would have probably never tried morphine once if not for that lesson…
Also didn’t the cia sell drugs? Maybe it really was an advertisement?
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CIA_drug_trafficking_allegations
According to Tim Weiner, the Central Intelligence Agency “has been accused of forming alliances of convenience with drug traffickers around the world in the name of anti-Communism” since its creation in 1947.
This was part of a more all-encompassing effort to leverage organized crime syndicates and other black market networks as methods of infiltrating, subverting, and ultimately dissolving Soviet Socialist Republics. Because the drug trade was such a lynchpin of the colonial-era plantation movement, you had a lot of anti-communist sympathizers already forced underground in the face of communist revolutions (which also, incidentally, tended to be anti-drug use).
Armies of Nationalist China fled into Thailand Myanmar, and Cambodia to run heroin operations and only significantly influenced the regimes in the region for decades and today.
DARE should have just told me that pot would just make me really sleepy and make me eat too much… causing an 8 lb weight gain overnight. That would have been enough. They should have avoided telling me anything about speed.
Weed not actually being dangerous… when you find that out it’s like leaving the Matrix
I mean, I would have appreciated some information about weed influencing my body and brain development before I am ~25. Then I might have waited that time or smoked less. Now I can only imagine if I might have become less of a scatterbrain. Instead I was told that all drugs are bad and they will make me addicted and push me to drug-related crimes, which did not turn out believable enough.
Are you sure you’re not a scatterbrain from undiagnosed ADHD that you’ve been self-medicating with the weed?
I definitely had/have undiagnosed something but I don’t blame the drugs… those came after my lived experience being socially awkward, rocking to soothe myself and mostly daydreaming all day and forgetting homework existed. I can’t imagine what my mother was thinking trying to comb out my rats nest hair in the morning. No wonder she had it cut really short.
regardless, that would not do anything for other people experiencing the general case
That’s not true though.
People really struggle understanding anything else than “it’s horribly deadly” and “it’s harmless”.
What’s wrong with edibles?
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cannabis_(drug)#Adverse_effects
Might be less bad than other drugs but it’s not this magical thing that can never do anything wrong.
And that’s without counting things like driving under the influence of it.
You’re absolutely right. And if you try them yourself, unfortunately most drugs are really good, at first.
That’s the problem with drugs, no?
When you can stop you don’t want to, and when you want to stop, you can’t.
I don’t remember where I read it, but I think it summs it up perfectly.
“Studies published in the 1990s concluded that D.A.R.E. had little to no effectiveness in preventing drug use in elementary, middle, or high school students, and may actually lead to increased drug use.” https://www.britannica.com/procon/DARE-Drug-Abuse-Resistance-Education-debate
Same thing as Christians and their anti-porn crusade. I got introduced to the concept of porn through church, lmao.
They were daring you to try to beat the stats.
They taught us that drugs were evil and done by bad people. The first time I smoked pot, I realized I was lied to and wondered what other drugs were like.
Gatewayed by the marijuanas. We were warned about this, smdh
I’m amused by the one dissenter who downvoted both of us. Hey dissenter: a ton of people agreed with our takes and only you disagreed. This isn’t a forum for you. Go find a place where people share your views.
There was definitely a point in my life that I saw weed users the same as heroin, etc.
I’ve never used either, but thankfully my views have changed anyway. It does show how much harm it causes when your informative spiels get one thing wrong.
They showed us a video like
Acid makes you see sounds and taste colors, and isn’t addictive… But don’t do it!
Before the video I absolutely had no desire to try acid, and after the video all I could think was like “what does a color taste like?!?!”
now I wanna try
Psychonaut with a couple of decades experience here: Acid can be excellent fun. For many years it was my favourite intoxicant. It definitely has a dark side to it tho.
If you are taking acid for the first time then you should do it with good friends and ideally have either a tripsitter (a sober friend who can help if things start to get a bit overwhelming) or someone who has taken it a few times before.
Do it in a safe space where you feel comfortable and is available for your use for the duration of the trip.
Be prepared for the long haul. A typical acid trip lasts around 8 hours and once you’ve dropped, there’s no going back.
Have a playlist of music that makes you happy, and have your favourite feel-good movie on hand.
If you are feeling anxious or depressed DO NOT DO IT. Acid does not make you feel good like ecstasy or mdma or 2cb. If you are feeling shit it will make you feel 10x worse but if you are in a good place, with good friends, then it is amazing.
Thank you for listening to my head talk.
That’s honestly one of the reasons I decided I probably don’t want to try it. I’m genuinely a nice person but I lean hard into negativity and I am classified as a pessimist. It’s one of the reasons why I’m pretty much the most prepared person in my friend group but it’s also the reason why I don’t want to take anything like acid because if I already think anything can go bad give me a reason to start like going into things that have no logical basis and I will probably end up in a bad place.
That’s fair enough dude. It’s strong stuff and it’s hard to break out if you’re having a bad one. Last time I did it was just after COVID, I was not in the right head space, and it really sent me sideways in a way that it never had before. So now I steer clear. I’d still recommend shrooms tho. They are a much friendlier psychedelic experience.
They should have just warned that acid would make you lose a few days. Shrooms will do that too but also land you in a bathroom for hours backandforth… was it just so much fiber??? I never experimented soaking them in hot water for a couple hours before ingesting like dried food mushrooms.
The chitin that makes up shrooms causes stomach upset because your body can’t do anything with it. Making tea and discarding the solids may provide a smoother experience.
I’m sure there are other more thorough forms of extraction, but this is the basic way I know of.
til chitin isn’t just a bug thing, and i am disturbed. somehow eating mushrooms is now akin to eating bugs at this moment. 😩
Look up stuff like lemontek. If you use a sugar base, psilocybin is sugar soluble. Should cut out the nasty feelings and be just slightly more potent. Someone correct me if I’m wrong.
Don’t go get free ebooks on safe platforms like libgen or annas-archive !!
One of my buddies loves to wear his D.A.R.E. sweatshirt when he smokes.
- Drugs

I found one that says “Dispensaries Are Really Expensive”
I also live in a waspy town and several people have noticed the DARE letters, struck up a conversation about how great the program was and we should bring it back, etc. Then they actually read it and get all huffy. Best $24.99 I ever spent.
Does he say no to his weed and then smoke it?
In Canada back in the day cops would come into the classroom. They had big boards with all the drugs attached. More than a few times, they disappeared off the board.
I remember a constable coming to class with one of these and commenting that I had excellent veins should I ever do IV drugs. They 100% set us up to fail.
What I always found funny later in life was they never said anything about DMT. It was like they didn’t want us to be aware of DMT existing, even though it was discovered in the 30s, found naturally in the 40s, known hallucinogenic for hundreds or thousands of years, but only studied as a hallucinogen in the 50s.
DMT is a glorious hallucinogen that any psychonaut should pursue, it is easier to obtain than LSD and profoundly better with shorter lasting effects than LSD or mushrooms. You got an hour to spend and are willing to shatter reality? DMT can change your mind.
I have a DARE shirt that says ‘Drugs Are Really Expensive’ underneath and i feel like thats a more effective deterrent than anything they said in the program.
Ah, yes, the
massivelymostlykind ofnot really at all successful D.A.R.E. Program. It was successful at grabbing my interest. “Drugs Are Really Expensive” would have been a far better message.
My dad would change the wording of Dare Tshirts with tipp-ex so that “dare to say no to drugs” would instead say “dare to say hi to roger” (in swedish) 😂
I did drugs before DARE. So, we knew they were full of shit. However it was the late 70s so we had legit caution about drugs that were administered with needles so avoided those… Then the cocaine era happened.
I remember learning about acid. If you do acid, you will freak out and stab a pencil through your eye.
I was 100% the target audience for DARE lol. I remember my classmates asking me what drugs I wanted to try from the lesson and I would be so confused because the way the officer spoke of the effects made taking them seem very scary to me.
I’m now a big pothead so maybe I’m not that much of an outlier.
Just out of curiosity, what changed your mind and how old were you when that change happened?
Honestly, I think just talking to people who used cannabis or other substances that was part of the DARE program (which included alcohol and tobacco) was a major factor.
When I was 17, I meet a lot of people who used those substances regularly, and hearing their experiences with it made me realize that the effects that the program portrayed each drug having was total BS. What stuck with me was how different of a drug weed was made out to be than how it affected people in real life. The DARE program made it seem like it was meth in plant form, but all I was hearing was stories of people feeling like they are floating, enjoying movies, and eating snacks.
It peaked my curiosity and from then on I was super interested in trying it. Plus, that it was completely legal at this time too, so most of the programs deterrents for buying drugs in general became redundant.
Thank you for sharing!
Drugs Are Really Excellent.
In middle school, my health class was all about how in high school, there’d be all these crazy sex and drug fueled parties and one day I turned to my friend and said “I cannot wait for high school”.
