and come to the realisation that MGS3 is not in fact a straight-laced military stealth action game but a goofy anime melodrama with shounen villains

Naming aside, I did always like the Shagohod for looking convincingly like a primitive 60s version of a Metal Gear. In Peace Walker and MGSV they just didn’t give a fuck about the mech designs making sense with the series’ timeline

That always irked me about V, I never got to play it but when I watched LP’s I was like “wtf it’s the 80’s and they have a literal gundam of a metal gear that makes rex and ray look like puny babies”.

“Umm actually they never got the Sahelanthropus to work properly and it was being psychically marionetted by a baby Psycho Mantis the whole time” is what was supposed to be going on, I think. Not that it makes it at all better because it just looks like a bipedal Metal Gear REX, and I thought REX was supposed to be wholly designed by Otacon who made it look like a dinosaur anime robot because he’s a huge nerd. RAY also looked like a dinosaur because it was based on REX

The Metal Gears in the first two pre-Solid Metal Gear games looked like this:

I’ve always viewed V as like, stories told about what Big Boss did, and not the actual true events of what happened. It’s basically an interpretation or genetic memory for Solid.

          spoiler

Especially since MSG V is mostly told from the perspective of Venom Snake, who is not Big Boss. We don’t really know what Big Boss was actually up to most of the time.

I’m still salty about the Venom Snake twist. It was obvious what Kojima was going for from the random character generation at the start of Phantom Pain and how the Boss AI treated Snake, but I was still disappointed. I was hoping we’d finally have the Big Boss timeline catch up to all the stuff characters in MGS1 were saying about him and we’d get to actually see that Big Boss but no, we got some more convoluted bullshit instead. There’s always been a hole in the MGS series since Snake’s entire backstory and Big Boss’ villain turn are all confined to the MSX games

If Konami is going to keep doing MGS remakes, I hope they do a MG1 & MG2 remakes at some point
