I’m a video game awards hater until the industry unionizes and has their own nomination and voting process.
These award ceremony winners are always chosen by some shadowy organization, “The Academy” or “The Committee” or whatever.
But then you open up The Academy’s trenchcoat and inside it’s just a bunch of corporations doing marketing.
How is that Metaphor game? I’m not a big anime-style game fan so I never really gave it a good look. Is it like Final Fantasy?
More like Persona but they’re not in high school
they aren’t technically in high school but the main plot is ‘be the most popular kid in the kingdom’
damn, atlus got so bold since persona 3
What is a Persona if not a SMT game but inside a school

SMT If… fans rn (all 3 of them):

Ah, never played Persona either. Is the game itself good?
My partner and I really loved it. It has the day-by-day system like persona but barely involves the typical SMT monsters (no fusion either). It’s takes on everything except monarchy are decent iirc.
If you only played Final Fantasy it’s harder to compare (the only FFs I’ve played are 4-6, 10+ years ago, and lost interest in all of them). It’s turn based, anime fantasy (but thankfully not as cliche as teen dramas - most characters are and act like young adults, with little fanservice), has a fantastic job system (with a lot of job combinations having combo attacks), and give you extra turns for hitting weaknesses. It also has lifesim elements (cook, talk, read to get stats and abilities) and a calendar system, so activities take time - it’s very generous though.
My only issue was crappy balance past the midgame - some bosses are too weak or strong, and by the endgame you are silly overpowered if you’re a completionist. The story’s great but not groundbreaking. Characters are generally good.

I’m out. I’m just here for the story and the roleplaying. I don’t need to run a family during the game.
If you want the gameplay, I’d recommend trying other Atlus games, like mainline Shin Megami Tensei (keeps the “extra turns on weakness” mechanics but is more deep about it, since you make monsters based on mythology like Pokemon - it’s straight up Persona without lifesim) or Etrian Odyssey (pretty much peak class based JRPG to me, but the good ones are locked to 3DS), though alongside lifesim they cut down on story too.
Most Atlus fans love them for gameplay, which I heard is harder than FF due to importance of buffs and such. Their only JRPGs that I’d recommend for story without lifesim elements are PS2 games like Digital Devil Saga, maybe SMT IV (which is 3DS locked), and Persona 2 I heard. SMT VV for instance has good atmosphere and mythology references, but little character focus.
Honestly I just don’t think these games are for me. Maybe if it becomes available on PS Plus one day I could give it a shot.
Wtf I had never even heard of the 2024 one.
It’s been on my backlog for a bit. It’s Atlus so very similar to SMT/Persona but I’ve heard it has far better writing than they typically have.
It’s the devs behind Persona. Has a very “anime” style.
disclaimer: i have not played metaphor fantazio
i really liked sea of stars too. turns out that all jrpg combat was missing was a parry mechanic.
i do like the mario/paper/M&L rpgsoh yeah, i hadn’t thought about it because especially the parry mechanic isn’t a mandatory thing to master like in e33, but i always loved the mario rpgs for similar reasons. the original m&l game deserves more love.
what if, like it was a JRPG but there was something to do while you played
revolutionary
Parrying ruins it for me, unless it’s on the depth of Mario & Luigi, by which point it’s an Action game with RPG elements. It turns “oh I died, I’d better rethink my strat or party comp” to “oh I died, I’ll do the same thing but push buttons better”.
Imagine if you could slap the enemy’s wrist away in chess.
I thought most RPGs were turn based? I am out of the loop so perhaps I was wrong.
There was a long period in which most RPGs were “action RPGs.” Sometimes those were actual RPGs (e.g. Mass Effect), but often they were action games with some light RPG elements. Turn based never really died, but for the last 15 or 20 years it’s been broadly considered a very very niche genre with absolutely no mass appeal potential. It’s nice to see that shifting.
it’s their turn
