Ok so I’ve barely played this game so far, I’m only up to the Blighted Village. But I heard this guy is an annoying as fuck Redditor but so far he’s just been a lovable dork. Does he get worse or something?

Honestly having Moss from The IT Crowd in my party is a breath of fresh air considering the other party members consist of an angry green fascist, a goblin racist, a foppish dandy who immediately tried to cut my throat, and someone called Shadow Fart.

I heard he was more obnoxious before patches. Do tell.

Edit: Oh and Wyll is there too I guess. I unironically forgot he existed lmao

Before the patches, Gale’s romance meter would fill up really really fast and off of non-flirty, friendly interactions. “Sure Gale, I’d like to hear more about magic some time but I’m busy now” would basically be enough for him to become aggressively interested in you, fuelling a lot of Nice Guy type jokes about him

      fucking hell, this explains it

i swear i had three conversations with him before he was like “please join me down by the river, i need to express my feelings to you”.
my man, you told me you like magic and that you need to eat enchanted swords to live, i don’t even bring you on quests - simmer down

I feel like this is a substantial amount of video game romance writing, which leads me to go “wait, what? romance begins now?” (there are some better written ones, but I feel like this is regular for many cRPGs)

(the romances in Shadowrun: Calfree In Chains were ok, though rather linear)

I feel like this still happens, I started my playthrough in the patch before last and him telling me he needed someone to talk to translated into him wanted to slam like immediately.

Honestly I was sorely disappointed by the social elements of the game in general - probably because of all the hype the game got. Very often I wasn’t able to give the kind of answer I felt I wanted to in a given situation, and in general I wasn’t able to play my character with the personality I had in mind much at all.

There was something where everyone’s first romance scene was super easy to trigger. His was kinda obnoxious, and felt like him mansplaining magic to the PC if I remember right.

Oh my god, him mansplaining the Weave to my sorceress was fucking infuriating. I live and breathe magic, my guy, I do not need you to lead me in a guided meditation or whatever it is we’re doing!

And then when you find out his backstory it sounds like exactly the kind of thing I would veto if he were a PC in my game. You’re level 1, dude!

They were definitely all(?) high level characters before the brainworm

            will

Will could summon greater demons in his backstory, meaning he was lv11 at minimum.

            karlach

Karlach cannot have survived as soldier in hell for decades and not leveled up at all, that’s also impossible. Devils and demons are strong

            shart

Shart is supposed to be a sharran elite, and all the mobs in the temple are like level 5 at minimum. She was definitely way higher, at least lv 9.

So will being a high level wizard in his backstory is pretty believable. Almost none of these characters work as level 1 characters. Maybe astarion or laezel? Idk

I always assumed the level 1 bit was a result of the brainworms, but you’re right, the redditor wizard is probably the biggest stretch of that.

            Various spoilers.

Yeah, it’s pretty silly. His backstory was probably near or at Epic level

            spoiler

if he genuinely thought he could fuck around with Karsus’ Folly - that’s one of the few things that would have your peer superwizards (who mostly dislike each other) joining forces to put a stop to.

I think pretty much all the character’s backgrounds were a poor choice on their part. You don’t need a shred of backstory upfront if the writing is up to snuff, and having theirs be so high-level kinda makes everything happening pretty low stakes - the intro cinematic with the spelljammer vs dragonriders is basically a level 20 action sequence, and then you’re slogging through mud and goblins hearing about how cool everyone else used to be, having just seen how cool the stuff you don’t get to do is.

Plus Elminster could genuinely solve all of it in about three hours, so he shouldn’t have even been there to say:

            spoiler

“So I hear you’re an unstable antimagical nuclear weapon now Gale?”.

Then teleport away without doing anything about it.

But eh, the story and stakes are all over the place.

            spoiler

It isn’t even actually mind flayers! It’s just mid-level clerics of the three gods who job harder than Skeletor, with a plan so intensely stupid - fucking around with Illithid - that it can only function via the power of a saturday morning cartoon villain’s mcguffin.

It’s… like the Battle Angel Alita movie. It likes the source material too much, so it crams in too many elements from much later and weakens itself in the process. Or perhaps the poison of escalation.

            spoiler

It isn’t just hints of the mind flayer space empire, it’s a netherese superweapon, no wait, it’s also the Dead Three! The city you’ll reach in thirty hours will be destroyed - and the entire world hangs in the balance! Only your level 12 characters can save the universe!

There was also a large straight cis-male gamer audience that does not understand that rejecting someone’s romantic advances (and/or did not understand that he was making romantic advances) is not a mean/rude thing to do, leading to situations like this hilarious comic.

I think specifically feeding him magic items was quickly filling up his “NPC likes you” meter now that I think of it

There was also a bug where he’d just… Say lines that were meant for characters romancing him abruptly.

On my first playthrough it got so bad I couldn’t do his actual quest because he kept talking about how much he loved me

      The bit where

      spoiler

You can manupulate the moon lantern ritual circle and he’s like “oh you better leave it to an expert” berdly-smug and if you dare to try it without him he gets pissy at you and basically says you’re not competent enough for it to have been anything other than luck. I actually hated the little shit after that. My wizard PC has better stats than you, dumbass cracker magician!

Then you learn he got into a toxic relationship with the goddess of magic where he of course knows better than literal gods and gets himself super cursed with a magic WMD that could kill half a continent - and he still hasn’t learned his lesson and tries to guilt and emotionally manipulate the PC into letting him control the artifact of doom macguffin! I hate Gale lmao

i dunno, i fed him an enchanted stick or something and then he wanted to spoon and develop a meaningful long term love or some shit

this was like 3 hours in, i completely ADHD’d out on this game even though I know it’s elite. I think I also fucked the vampire but he didn’t turn me and lae’zel was into me.

also, everyone seems to like some evil purple woman but she was trying to kill a bunch of people with goblins? apparently she can be in your party but i literally pushed her down the convenient chasm into the earth she was standing next to

He’s fine. People on the internet are addicted to rageahol.

His backstory does make him out to be kind of a jerk, but I don’t think you learn the details until Act 2 or maybe 3.

Aside from the romance issue, the problem is that Gale is a whiny douchebag who basically trips his way into higher power, ascribing many of your achievements to himself (even if you do not bring him along on quests) and thus thinking himself worthy of praise and other things that I will not reveal because of spoilers.

My friends and I were pissed that even after we made the choice to deny him one of these ‘really bad ideas’ he has, we were forced to see him achieve it in the post-game, and then were not allowed to kill him for doing something explicitly against our wishes, which we were entitled to make since we were the ones who actually saved the city, which he then seemingly forgot that we were opposed to because the BG3 writers aren’t always to maintain coherent character emotional arcs and memory after Act 1 ( omg I love Act 1 though, so good), which can lead to some very funny story moments.

Perhaps he is better if you take him along (though he was already an annoying wizard to begin with) but if you are playing multiplayer and simply wish to save him by not dismissing him from your party, the story devs will still try to force him and his frankly absurd OC level goals down your throat because he is clearly one of their favorites.

Edit: That said, I am honestly not a huge fan of any of the NPCs especially compared to the interesting people you met in Divinity 2, which is the superior Larian game imo because it isn’t tied to the exploitation strategies that plague D&D 5E as a system, so much so that bosses have to randomly lose status effects to maintain any level of difficulty.

That isn’t to say BG3 is bad, just that, having played hundreds of hours of both, D2 is the more compelling game, in large part due to its much more difficult, and intricate combat system, which allows you to actually use status effects on bosses though they were a pain to get to stick, and encouraged you to really combo powers, rather than just have a couple one-trick pony styles.

Anyways, my point is that most of the characters are pretty meh, but Gale is absolutely the most annoying if you play the game not really interacting with him.

Edit the 2nd: Basically none of the characters are that great unless you want to have sex with them. Karlach was my favorite though, story-wise, because at least she has a character reason to be a dumbass.
