Just when you think Chris Roberts’ retirement fund program brrrrrrrrrrrr couldn’t get anymore absurd, they manage to surprise. Even the so-true long time backers thought it was going too far.

Witkin then claimed the reason CIG pulled the trigger too fast on flight blades is because the developer is having a busy year. “We’re pushing 11 patches this year instead of 4. We’re crushing more bugs than ever, building more exciting content, moving faster than ever to make the Persistent Universe a better experience for everyone, and in moving that fast, we missed a step.”

morshupls Folks, we totally overlooked the monetization factor of this soon to be released new nickel and dime scheme.

However, when these upgrades were initially added to the game, they could only be purchased with hard cash, costing between $9.60 and $42 depending on which set you bought.

wait so people finally got sick over a 10 dollar upgrade? what about the fucking pay to win thousand dollar ships? do Goomer brains really think “yeah it might cost one grand but since it’s available in the game for 10 morbillion credits it’s not pay to win.” ??!?

This is the thing they’re upset about? Not…everything else so far?

“I’m fine with them not delivering on anything, and overpromising and never delivering, I’m fine with them charging me money for parts of the game that will never appear, I’m fine with the best ships being the most expensive, and therefore pay to win, but THIS pay to win system goes too far!”

I have a coworker who’s into SC, though he only bought the base “get the game if it releases and can play early access now” pack, and I’m not that surprised. There are a decent number of people who just think the game is neat and aren’t bothered by the overall future game being P2W because, so long as the game doesn’t exist now, there’s no actual proof that it’ll be pay to win in the future.

Theres a set of (sadly unfinished) videos on youtube by a former SC Whale and community helper who actually went as far as providing like 40 grand of seed money at the very beginning that details Chris Roberts career, including the stuff he was doing for the years between wing commander and the SC Kickstarter and abunch of behind-the-scenes stuff that paints a pretty clear picture. Roberts was a guy who lucked out with wing commander at the right time and place but essentially bungled its further success by wanting to produce movies and trying to force that through wing commander 3. After that failed because he was actually quite bad at management and any sort of directing he failed at actually getting into directing and ending up also failing to run a car rental service in LA in the hopes that he would rent a car to a celebrity that would give him an in to direct again.

Then the SC kickstarter happened and blew up beyond his wildest dreams, and so CR very quickly went from flogging his last bit of goodwill and nostalgia for peanuts to suddenly being a multi-millionaire and, like most people suddenly incredibly wealthy, promptly realised he would much rather go off and spend his unearned money in a blissful rich man retirement and only occasionally pop in to fuck with developers and prevent the project from actually getting anywhere.

Just go and watch the SQ42 trailer they released last year with the first mission in it, it has the shitty hallmarks of Chris Roberts terrible directing all over it. Resulting in the most boring generic Sci-Fi slop you’ve ever seen.

I could never get the game to run properly even on low settings and a 4080 gpu. Maybe I need a 1080p monitor?
