So sick of these kinds of posts. At this point it should be obvious that the blatant hypocrisy isn’t stupid or some clever “gotcha,” it’s the entire point. It’s a demonstration of impunity and contempt for fairness and logical consistency.

How about you pay teachers more so right-wingers can see teaching as an “actual career choice”.
Because now only those who care about other people and society and want to improve it no matter what it pays are going to become teachers. And selfless people tend to be left-wing.
Eh, I’ve had some really great teachers but I’ve had just as many shitty and even straight-up abusive teachers, plus plenty of in-between “meh” ones. A lot of school districts are really desperate for staff, especially in rural areas, the result being they’ll hire anyone with a pulse if they have the credentials, and won’t tend to let them go until they really do something bad.
Hell, even when they don’t have the credentials I can personally think of several cases where the school district pulled some strings to let an unqualified person teach under the “watch” of an actually qualified teacher, themselves of course busy teaching in the next town.
So coming back again, with teaching wages this low, a teacher may be doing the job selflessly out of the goodness of their heart, but at the same time there are too many people only in the job for the authority (because authority over kids is all they could scrounge up).
So I totally support raising teacher wages, not because they all deserve it but because it might attract some actual professionals.
I imagine a lot of shit teachers keep their jobs simply because there’s usually not a huge pool of candidates for replacements. Higher wages would help fix that issue, too!

Freakonomics did this analysis a long time ago. I think it’s been a decade or more so maybe the landscape has changed, but, essentially, it’s not that education turns educators liberal, it’s liberals seek careers in education.
As for the rest, yes, this would be DEI.
Interesting. I wonder about that, because the research on the student side seems to be the opposite: exposure to information, to a framework for rational thought, and most crucially to people of different backgrounds pushes people to the left. So how deep did they go? Would it be accurate to say that people who are educated seek careers in education, and since those people are more likely to be progressive, the transitive property applies?
I wonder.
I’d have to read it again to recall. I do remember money or the lack thereof being an influencing element, liberals leaning on the work itself before the money.

Hm, that makes a lot of sense. I know that I’m staying in my job (which is education-adjacent) despite being underpaid, because I’d rather be underpaid doing something valuable than overpaid doing something nobody cares about (I used to do that, being laid off was the best thing that ever happened to me).
Hm… so, I’ve seen conservative faculty before, and no, it’s not great because you get some pretty wild takes. It’s especially true of culturally conservative types (but less so of fiscal conservatives, they usually just have weirdly biased and racist takes).
First, consider the type of ideology – if you get past the anti-science types that reject all evidence, conservatives who try to listen to evidence do some pretty wild mental gymnastics to maintain contradictions between science and religion. E.g. I knew a women who believed in Noah’s ark but also was in psychology. To her, it was a bottleneck in human genetics, but like, c’mon. Bottlenecks are usually a few hundred, not a single family, lol.
This isn’t so bad in some fields, but in social sciences it really falls apart because philosophically, you’re talking about determinism and the concept of God’s given free will, personal responsibility, etc, which gets challenged when your science is literally saying these behaviors are a result of environmental and genetic reasons. Sociology, criminology, psychology, all these make no sense at the core when you apply conservative ideology.
I had a right wing sociology professor.
After the semester she banned laptops from her class because I fact checked her so much. Bitch tried to claim shit like the CDC said condoms were 100% ineffective at preventing pregnancy.
And that’s why Economics and Political Science are the only sciences where you might find conservatives with valid scientific and political perspectives.
got a degree in econ at a right wing college. i took a macro course discussing economic growth in “3rd world countries”, which had already fallen out of use in academia for “developing nations”. The professor discussed how africa had basically been used as a playground for western imperialists (not his words) to test their economic theories via targeted grants, loans, &c. It wouldn’t have been bad had he been able to contain his glee at the ideas. You could see the wheels turning that he had a plan of his own that had either already been executed or he was on the brink of getting the grant funded, so he could be the next imperialist in the playground.
From a historian’s perspective, it was fascinating (the same way Johan de Witt’s death is fascinating) but there was no presentation of the idea that maybe we should stop fucking with an entire continent’s economy just for shits and giggles. which would have been nice.
And even then… an economics professor I had once suggested minorities are in lower SES because of genetics. Very much not a good, or accurate take. This was in 2010s.

There are still plenty of conservative people in higher education. I unfortunately know MDs (usually surgeons…) who are even against M4A, are racist, sexist, etc.
every once in a while you end up in an ER where they aren’t just throwing around gallows humor, they’re being downright ableist. that’s a whole different kind of fun.
There may be an academic name for it, but I call it the Min-Max Effect. Technical experts in demanding fields (medicine, law, engineering, etc.) frequently spend all their time and effort learning and developing their technical expertise, at the expense of everything else. This creates a lot of brilliant doctors, lawyers, engineers, etc., who are absolutely clueless about anything outside their specialty.
It’s probably not helped by the fact that school for those fields is quite expensive, so we might expect those who grew up wealthy to be more likely to graduate; poorer students rely on scholarships and loans, and even part time work.
They’re not hypocrites.

To work at a university, You need to be educated. Education leads to liberal views. If You educate a conservative enough to be a professor, he’ll stop being conservative. I believe that’s called a cath 22.
