Trust them to do what exactly? Were y’all asleep during covid? You can’t trust humans to put a mask on during a pandemic. But I don’t go into every interaction assuming the worst of the other person. Now if we’re talking about the American government? Yeah that’s a valid sentiment.

Trust them to have basic human decency, trust them to not invade Canada, trust them to rigorously oppose a criminal regime?

As George Carlin said: “Well, where do people think these politicians come from? They don’t fall out of the sky. They don’t pass through a membrane from another reality. They come from American parents and American families, American homes, American schools, American churches, American businesses and American universities, and they are elected by American citizens. This is the best we can do folks. This is what we have to offer. It’s what our system produces: Garbage in, garbage out. If you have selfish, ignorant citizens, you’re going to get selfish, ignorant leaders.”

It is time for a US and Canadian citizenship exchange program. There are plenty of US citizens that would enjoy life in Canada and the racist neo-Nazi Canadians would relish life in a deregulated red run Oblast.

Hey I’ve got a great idea: Let’s transfer pro-democracy folks to the country with a weak global standing and military, and transfer all the fascists to the world’s sole superpower, operator of the largest navy, two largest air forces and the largest functional reserve of nuclear weapons on the planet.

Your schools aren’t great either, huh?

America lost in Korea, lost in Vietnam, and lost against the Taliban, which at their peak was 100k insurgents.

If you think America has a strong military you need to stop drinking the kool-aid.

Canada is part of NATO and the commonwealth. America has almost no allies anymore and Canada has the most allies of any country.

Canada is more powerful than the USA.

America won in all those wars. However those wars show that winning the war isnt the end and if you want things to hold you need significant follow up and american support is fickle.

Say what now? Please explain how the US won any of those wars? Last I checked, North Korea is still a thing; Saigon was renamed Ho Chi Minh and the Taliban rule Afghanistan. But ya it was a “support” problem. They never won those wars because no one wants US imperialism.

Came here to say this. The last decade has truly flipped my perception of the rest of america on its head. Well, my perception of conservatives, at least. I always knew that people are people and there’s a spectrum of good to bad. I’ve come to realize that Republicans literally do not care about trying to help anyone else unless they see some sort of personal return of either money or power. I’ve seen so many people that I thought were “a good, slightly dumb person misguided by politics” fully throw themselves behind Trump. Everything that they say they believe in is apparently a lie, since they so readily line up to worship a person so antithetical to what they pretend to believe. I can not and do not trust anyone that identifies with Republicans or even conservatism at this point.

    that’s completely fair

for all the terrible things both political parties wrought globally from the end of WWII until a Jan 20, 2017, they were united (more or less) in a commitment to being a rules and laws based main even if it hurt “their side” from time to time.

Even Reagan’s “11th Amendment” would be set aside from time to time to preserve America’s standing in the world.

Not so any more. And i don’t actually know if it’s possible to get that reputation back.

My parents are in this 4 of 10. They watch Fox News, donate regularly to the Republican party even though they are Canadian, they do not donate to the conservative party of Canada (I dunno), call me every time Carney does something they dislike because I voted Liberal, and still spend a good chunk of their time in Florida where they own property and are proud of it.

Trump has become an unpopular subject as my sister will lose her shit at family gatherings so they no longer mention his name. But are big supporters!

“maple MAGA” like your parents kind of fascinate me. I wonder how deep the mentality goes for these people, and how much is just aesthetics and/or a deeply misguided attempt to escape from the relative boredom of a safe 1st-world country whose democracy is still intact. It demonstrates a stunning lack of awareness though, and it’s cute how they don’t seem to realize that actual MAGA would likely reject them out of hand for being “foreigners”.

The US has been a shit show since the end of WWII and they’ve fucked over countless countries and people, mostly for greed. It’s laws are mostly setup first for greed, then for humans. Don’t trust that place, whatever president comes next will at best only be marginally better than the current shit stain

Thursday’s poll found that 42 per cent of Canadians said they believe Carney will succeed in negotiating a new trade deal with the Trump administration.

Why? I don’t want Canada to have a trade deal with the USA. I want Canada to isolate the USA. A trade wall, ideally armed with machine guns and flamethrowers. Let them stew in their own juices while we trade with countries that aren’t prone to electing obvious man-toddlers into the highest possible office.

If we elect our own little Hitler, we are a legit threat to the world. We really should be isolated until we can prove we are no longer carriers for the infection.

I have maintained for well over two decades now that there is no “left” in the USA.

What the USA considers “left” is centre-right in the view of the sane parts of the world. What the USA considers “far left” is “sensible social democracy” in the sane parts of the world.
