I tried bringing exactly this up and got the whataboutism argument

I am acknowledging the murder of Khashoggi was a heinous crime, and I’m just asking they acknowledge Israel also committed this heinous crime (over two hundred times; in addition to also targeting the families of the reporters) and that the news should make just as much a fuss. The guy was arguing that I’m trying to whitewash the murder of Khashoggi; BRO, I AM SAYING THE MURDER OF KHASHOGGI WAS MONSTROUS, I AM AGREEING WITH YOU 110%! I AM JUST SAYING THAT IF THE NEWS IS BEING OBJECTIVE AND NOT BEHAVING AS A STATE MOUTHPIECE, THEY SHOULD ALSO TALK ABOUT ISRAEL’S SLAUGHTER OF REPORTERS AS WELL! HOW ARE WE ARGUING ABOUT THIS!

It’s part of the same brainworm complex that makes them think being critical of the Democrats means you must support Republicans. They literally cannot conceive of politics outside the sports team style Red vs. Blue system–if I say “boo Red!” I must also mean “yay Blue!” and vice-versa. Similarly, there’s a “good country” set and a “bad country” set. If we disagree about whether a country is good or bad, we must just be using opposite sets.

I think it’s fine if they recognize and prioritize acting on things that they can actually influence, like America’s bankrolling of Israel’s genocide. The issue here is that the very real and otherwise valid criticism is serving as a patina for national/racial/religious chauvinism.

I completely agree about your view of Israel’s actions, what I was failing to communicate is that, among things going on today, it’s probably the most obvious and actionable example of a genocidal atrocity the US is responsible for, along with its treatment of immigrants. I was just saying that if someone is duly critical of their own nation and situations that are actionable by them, then their criticism of other country’s actions can be evaluated on their own merits, or at least such an evaluation should be entered into the total consideration. I feel like it’s unhelpful to say that such people who are duly critical, by virtue of being Americans, are disqualified from talking about – to pick an arbitrary example – the persecution of civilian groups in the Sudanese war, or even something less catastrophic but still clearly bad, like Japan’s historical revisionism wrt its treatment of Korean and Chinese people. So long as these aren’t being used as deflections or whatabouts from what America and its conspirators do, it’s a good thing for people to be aware of, discuss, and advocate about.

AND Jared Kushner? I don’t get it; a country AND an individual are buying a multi-billion dollar company? That’s so weird.

That’s like reading ‘China AND Macron’s high school teacher are buying Blizzard’.

Seems like it could be beneficial. It will be interesting what a company as big as EA going private will mean for what types of games they make. Of course it could just mean layoffs and stripping out the copper wire. But Saudi Arabia is doing this kind of thing more for “soft power” than for pure economic benefit. So I could see them trying to improve EA’s image by focusing on putting out good games rather than profit seeking via nickel-and-diming. But in all likelihood, nothing changes. I think it would definitely help Saudi Arabia’s image if they “saved” Electronic Arts.

I am also in favor of all foreign buyouts of American companies because the US should own less stuff lol. It can also mean less of a hard-line propagandistic American perspective. Although I doubt it will really change anything in a company like EA.
