When I was a kid, I really liked Modern Warfare 2 and 3. They just have great gamefeel, the maps and movement options feel like they combine well to make all sorts of different strategies work. The progression feels great too, using all sorts of different weapons to unlock their various upgrades and experiment with how they affect your approach to different situations, etc.
I only stopped playing these games back in the day because the playerbase moved on to the newer games and the proportion of cheaters left in the remaining playerbase was too high. So I haven’t called a duty in a long time, but recently I picked up MW2 & 3 through IW4x and plutonium respectively, and even today, with just a few weirdos like myself who want to play these games with functioning anticheat, I still feel like these games are great.
Last time I saw a “modern” call of duty game (though keep in mind what I think of as modern call of duty is probably like a decade old) it was all about super high speed movement tech, which also seems to be what other popular arcadey shooters are about these days too. I’ve never been very good at that sort of gameplay.
Then there’s the other side of shooters, the super tactical “esport” kind like Counter-Strike or Valorant. I’m about 20 years too late to start getting good enough at those to have fun with them. I’m glad people like them, but they’re not for me lol
Are there any shooters left that sit in this sort of middle ground? Not crazy fast paced, not super slow and tactical, but just a versatile and simple arcadey pew pew?
Kid? Modern Warfare 2?
Oh man how did I get so old
Isonzo, Italian Front. I’m an old school CS:Source, Halo CE - 3, Battlefield Bad Company 2 guy and this is the only shooter that’s been tolerable for me in years. Shame it has a small community but you can play with bots, which frankly in this day and age I’d almost prefer given the shit online communities. To me it’s a nice balance between full milsims like HLL which I don’t have the time or patience for anymore or the nightmare that is modern CoD.
Other than that I play BF1 and BF5. Pretty much all I can stand.
amazed to see no one said hell let loose
Every other not so much futuristic COD? Battlefield? Ubisoft did made their own COD called XDefiant but they already shut it down.
Idk what COD is these days tbh. do they make non-futuristic COD anymore? I thought it was just all Black Ops 14 set in the year 289384 these days.
Battlefield always seemed like it was about huge maps and matches that last 7 years where you walk 3 miles, get sniped by some guy lying in a bush, and then repeat

After the failure of IW they got back at the more grounded COD, don’t know how it is nowadays but wallrun and double jump are gone

Yeah basically and I don’t even like to play BF but is the one closer to gamefeel of COD
I played Battlefield 6 beta and the 3 miles and sniped feeling has been drastically reduced. This one might be up your ally.
the kind of shooter I like
Thought you meant this at first
The new battlefield (battlefield 6) looks promising in that regard. There’s quite a bit of focus on smaller maps and infantry gameplay, which has upset the die hard battlefield fans, but is going over well with the general audience. The call of duty modern warfare series was also rebooted in the last few years, as a return to the gameplay mechanics of the original modern warfare games, some of the original characters returned. But it’s not as good as the originals, and the plot is even worse than before. But modern warfare 2019 shouldn’t be that expensive if you just want to have a try at the modern warfare reboots and see if you like it.
I was so disappointed with it.
If it actually played like BF3/4 I would love it but it absolutely does not, it definitely played like a call of duty.
Bring back suppression mechanics.
I might have to try battlefield 6 then, that does sound like my kind of thing
And honestly I’m not interested in playing a reboot of a game I like. the game I like still exists, I’ll just play that one
The reboot is a different game, it’s not as if they remastered the old modern warfare games and called it a day (those also do exist seperate to the reboots). It’s just a return to a modern real world setting with some classic characters (Captain Price, Ghost) to reuse the modern warfare branding. But not a sequel or prequel, the plot line is different.
Yeah not the biggest fan of that either, but it’s probably the closest to the classic call of duty formula.
FEAR is the only game that comes to mind for what you describe, it’s nothing super fast paced not too tactical and slow like ARMA. It’s got bullet time, guns feel good to use, maps are alright, lot of civil infrastructure, warehouses, and office spaces.
I play a lot of half life mods and could recommend some of those, but there’s a handful on steam so it’s easy enough to check them out. Not that half life is super tactical but it’s never required any super fast moves.
Arma 3 is kind of a maybe. I say it with years of muscle memory for the controls and only really play with friends vs ai.
If you meant for multiplayer I got nothing. I liked battlefield, the combined arms took a lot of pressure off having to be super good.
honestly as someone who loved the games you were talking about back then, nothing scratches the itch for me quite the same. the best games i’ve found are battlefield. bf6 is coming out soon, the open beta was pretty good so i’m looking forward to it
a big issue in a lot of online shooters these days is that people with high refresh rates have a huge advantage over other players. you can have a 60hz monitor and get 60fps and get beat out really easily by someone on a 244hz display just cause they basically saw you first due to their higher framerate. back in the mw2/3 days we were all at the same frame rate and refresh rate.
Go play Trepang2
I have played it, it’s ok in a half life sort of way. I am surprised I keep getting recommendations for single player only games when my post only references multiplayer gameplay lol
IMO there just aren’t any good multiplayer games right now. They’re all stuck in microtransaction hell and trend-chasing after either Fortnite or The Finals. They just don’t play like what you’re looking for.
If you were into boomer shooters or the Quake/Unreal arena shooters I’d have some recommendations, but I don’t think Splitgate or Sauerbraten are gonna meet the vibe you’re looking for. Maybe Quake Champions?

That’s the vibe I’ve had for a while. I’m not a fan of battle royales (I’m bad at video games, so a high ratio of chores to action just means I’m barely getting any action) so ever since Fortnite blew up it’s pretty much been a desert for me.
Quake/Unreal arena shooters
I’ve played a little bit of Quake, and my pretty uninformed impression is it’s basically the same as the modern slidey-walljumpey shooter in that everyone moves a million miles an hour and jumps all over the place so you have to be really good at high speed tracking and big flicks
Yeah, there are a ton of Movement Shooters, and Quake Champions is definitely one of those. The older Quake games like Quake Live/Quake III Arena have lots of Bunny Hopping and high speed movement even there, though. Even Titanfall is like that.
I’m enjoying the Star Wars: Battlefront II style conversion mod for Insurgency Sandstorm, but mostly I’ve just been playing Deep Rock Galactic with my wife for my shooter fix.
I used to enjoy the multiplayer modes in Destiny 2 before my friends and I tapped out on the game a few years ago.
Might be a hot take but I also loved and played the crap out of the original cod4 and mw2. Like a lot, and was really good at it with a great group of friends. Closest I got to that feel (and in some ways it even surpassed it) was the mw2 remake (not mw3 with OG mw2, but mw2 from a few years ago). The pace was much slower, maps were solid, and the gunplay and connection all felt like the originals I grew up on. And shotguns were actually viable but that’s just a thing I like
I put in as much time into that game as I did any of the original ones and it brought back a bunch of my friends too. We played for almost the whole year it was out and even met some new friends. It’s a bit of an older title but it’s under the cod umbrella game now and there’s still a player base. Was the highest peak player count cod ever had too, which goes to show how prevalent it was and how many people it probably brought back. There is mtx but it’s generally tame I think, just avoid buying skins
Closest thing I can think of might be something like insurgency sandstorm, which is pretty old at this point but is still receiving updates.
Squad/hell let loose are good, but are a different format entirely than why you’re talking about.
Battlebit was good for a bit but I get the impression that things have gone a bit haywire there.
Possibly battlefield 6 will be good, hasn’t been released yet.
the finals
Oh this might actually be my kind of thing, I will check it out
it’s a lot of fun, and their matchmaking seem to be good. it’s reasonably balanced imo.
they push microtransactions aggressively though, but otherwise a good game.
Ok I’ve played a couple matches of it. It’s definitely faster paced / more movey jumpey than my ideal game, but it’s got pretty slow movespeed and some fun close range fighting, I do enjoy it.
movement is a bit like apex legends, but not as sweaty. i think it strikes a good balance even for people not that into it, you can always lean more into more stationary heavy builds.
i’m returning to it, hit me up if you wanna do some matches.
if you’re open to a non-war-sim, ratchet and clank is about as arcadey pew pew as it gets
yes
