Y’all! This isn’t ABC - this is conservative Sinclair and Nexstar Media Group!

@Immarsano@lemmynsfw.com nailed this one by reading the article.

Nexstar Media Group forced ABC’s hand on this by saying they would run non-ABC programming on all their local TV stations they own. They’re in the process of getting FCC approval for a $6 billion deal that would give them ownership of 265 local TV stations in 44 states.

Meanwhile, Sinclair Media, which also owns tons of local TV stations, isn’t letting Kimmel’s rerun on Friday be broadcast anyway, instead showing a CK tribute show. So they were likely also going to do the same to ABC and just hadn’t said anything publicly because they don’t need deal approved right now.

This is the media version of Red-Stating, where state legislatures were slowly turned by the GOP which gave them the power to Gerrymander Dem-held House districts away and turn them red in 2021. How do you stop a global juggernaut liberal media company? You marginalize them by buying up all the local affiliates and stations that still make up a large part of their market. You buy up everything that sits in between the viewer and the media itself. Once the media company withers, you shove in your own programming as gaps open up.

See, I’m someone who can’t stand Jummy Kimmel. I find him both unfunny and very annoying as a person, and I never thought there would come a day where I would actually defend him vigorously, but here we are.

This is truly inexcusable. This is the most blatant violation of the first amendment possible. This is a clear cut example of the government coercing and colluding with corporations to censor a private citizen on a private show for comments that are perfectly legal. He was only censored because MAGA morons got triggered by a statement that’s not even controversial. Even IF it was controversial, that’s literally the whole point of free speech. It’s to defend offensive, controversial, and unpopular opinions from government persecution.

See, I didn’t care much when Colbert got cancelled because it seemed like it was a business decision, sure, whatever. But this? This is MAGA crossing a line that should never be crossed. We’re starting to enter into actual tyranny territory from this administration. The only MAGA conservatives left are either slimy opportunists or blind loyalists, so I’m not holding my breath on them holding themselves accountable. However, I am hoping that everyone else stands up and takes a stand against this because the consequences of this are very, very serious.

Forgive me, but I’m just trying to wrap my head around how many people have been sleeping and still are.

Tyranny is already here. It’s been here since they started taking people to concentration camps. Like how do people not get that? The line has already been crossed and then some. Tyranny is here and will continue to reign until you and everybody else who is asleep or groggy are willing to wake up and do the hard but correct actions.

German kids like inventing nonsensical words like that.

My favorite one I remember from my childhood is “Bettdeckenbezugsschonersonnenblumenmusterwebfehler”. Which roughly translates to: A weaving flaw in the sunflower pattern on a bed sheet cover.

We do, because it’s very easy to construct new and rather specific nouns in the German language.

The famous “Schadenfreude” is nothing else but a combination of “Schaden” (damage) and “Freude” (joy).

        Wanna mildly insult someone…

        • by saying he’s not man enough to take a cold shower? Call him a “Warmduscher” (warm + person taking a shower).
        • by saying he used to be the stupid kid at school who always forgot his gym bag? “Turnbeutelvergesser” (gym bag + person who forgets)
        • by saying he’s too scared to swim in the center of a swimming pool? “Beckenrandschwimmer” (pool’s edge + swimmer)

There are countless synonyms like that, it even used to be some kind of trend inventing new ones.

In short, I think we Germans are expert “Wortneuschöpfer” (creators of new words).

There’s an English idiom that states; “If it’s stupid and it works, it’s not stupid”.

Something similar to that can be said about the German language’s ability to form compound words.

Now, could you please humour me and let me know if there is one word that could describe a person who is too afraid to swim in the centre of a pool, can only take hot showers, always forgets their gym bag, and takes joy in the misery of others? 😆

Just to be clear: they suspended him for criticizing MAGA for trying to claim that the killer wasn’t one of them. He didn’t say anything about Charlie Kirk. He was censored for speaking truth by his own network. Not only censored, censured and suspended indefinitely.

We’re 100% there kids. The founding fathers made a point to put something right after freedom of speech, from religion, and of assembly. Right there 2nd in order. Unabridged. Welp the 1st amendment is being abridged as we speak. And I hear that second thing was put in place to protect that first thing. I’ve been hearing it for over 50 years.

*quick edit in case anyone else wants to try to educate me about the constitution: no, he isn’t protected by the 1st amendment from getting suspended. ABC should be protected but seeing as they’ve already settled for $16 million over threats on their FCC license and brought in new trump-friendly leadership, we can all agree he wasn’t suspended due to ratings drops. Stop pretending things are normal. This is an obvious 1st amendment issue.

Hold up - it goes a layer deeper and is actually fairly similar to what happened to Colbert.

ABC had their hand forced because of a pending merger between Nexstar Media Group and Tenga, which once the FCC approves it, would place Nexstar in ownership of 80% of local TV channels in the US. Nexstar is based in Texas, so it’s not exactly ABC-Disney friendly.

So they threatened to censor Kimmel themselves on local TV stations unless ABC did it for them. They had on the ground infrastructure power to do this.

And yes, we’re 100% there. The key point is to understand that while everyone sees ABC as the Big Bad here, it’s the infrastructure companies that have leverage and no one knows their names or how much they actually own.

Edit: Just saw this - Sinclair’s local ABC affiliates are replacing Kimmel reruns will air their own CK tribute show, just on their own whatever, fuck ABC’s programming.

Is someone working on building something like that? I saw the project Storj and the coin, and it seemed like a cool idea for storage, I guess.

What’d be great is if someone started making something like Nextcloud combined with some clones of things AWS components + Kubernetes and make that peer-to-peer as far as running the compute and getting redundant storage, etc.

There was a really interesting project about 10 years ago - cannot remember the name of it now. I think it was a prepackaged OS bundled with lots of self-hosting type of solutions out of the box. Still, that was isolated self-hosting.

ETA: I remember the project now, it’s FreedomBox: https://www.freedombox.org/

Look up what the Mulford act is. When the Black Panthers armed themselves and started patrolling their own neighborhoods in Oakland suddenly the Republicans were against carrying a loaded gun in public. The act was signed into law by then California governor Reagan and was even backed by the NRA

Republicans are pro free speech until they hear speech they don’t like. Republicans are pro 2A until they see people that aren’t them carrying guns.

Regardless of how fascist this is of course, I think the killer isn’t one of them, though? This is conspiracy thinking.

The Utah county prosecutors office released those texts, not the Trump administration. You’re suggesting that the president and his goons have infiltrated the local prosecutor to plant fake evidence where the shooter obliquely indicates he’s left leaning when the fuckwits can’t even keep reporters out of their signal chats?

Releasing non-confidential information to the public is common in high visibility cases like this at this point in the investigation. They haven’t released anything that would compromise witnesses etc. which is what should be kept under seal.

There is not enough information to confirm one way or the other, but there is a lot information being released. It’s not hard to find with a simple search. For example the court charges document. (Whether the investigation can be trusted is another question though)

There are no confirmations one way or another yet, but all the circumstantial evidence is pointing strongly that he was rooted in right wing ideologue.

        Which casing engravings were leftist?

No, not BULLETS. The bullets are the projectiles, not the enclosing brass

There’s no clear evidence either way. If you cherry pick certain facts you can paint a compelling narrative of any ideology.

My take is the dude, like most Americans, doesn’t fit cleanly into right or left politics but was motivated by violent rhetoric targeting queer people. But we’ll see if further information comes to light.

This is the chilling effect of Trump (the President) suing networks who report the truth about him, and recent rhetoric by members of Congress and the DoJ about using the force of government to silence a tractors. Self-centering before fascist wanna-tator comes after you doesn’t make it not a first amendment issue.

        It abso-fucking-lutely does.

This is the government controlling speech thru threat of trumped up criminal charges and frivolous lawsuits.

trumps been suing these big corps and they’ve been caving, it worked.

This time he sicced the FCC on them threatening criminal charges, and it worked again

There has to be consequences in the form of immediate loss of revenue or this will keep working and trump will keep asking for more.

Start paying attention cuz it’s getting to the point people won’t believe claims of ignorance for where things are headed.

I agree with your point; nothing in the comment I responded to made anything close to or even alluded to your point.

Just look at their “clarifying” response to my comment.

            Yeah. Saw that…

You’ve made it abundantly clear you’re treating this like a debate club and not the fall of our fucking country.

You know there was someone else who got relatively famous selling his soul doing that…

Freedom of the press is literally the first amendment. Television is protected by the first amendment. He was suspended because right wing lunatics didn’t like his free speech. In what world does this NOT have anything to do with the first amendment? Why am I even replying to you? You obviously have no idea what free speech means.

Shortly before ABC announced the suspension, Nexstar, an owner of ABC affiliate stations around the country, said that it would pre-empt Mr. Kimmel’s program “for the foreseeable future” because of his remarks.

Any creative ideas to turn cancel culture against these bitchass media companies & their dickhead affiliates? It needs to make the impact on their pocketbook to comply with fascism higher than the cost to oppose.
