It’s time for gamers to free ourselves of the shame we feel when we think of our backlogs. Every unplayed title is like a little reminder of one moment of weakness, and it can be tough to see all of those reminders listed alphabetically in your Steam library when you’re about to start your fiftieth Skyrim playthrough. But hey, it’s a collection! People fill their bookshelves with novels they’ve never read. We should be able to do the same with games! Here’s a list of the perfect titles to get you started.
No Man’s Sky
Everyone keeps insisting that this game has gotten much better since its infamous launch, since the developers have released frequent updates that have added a ton of content. Of course, that just means that it makes the most sense to keep holding off on playing it, because it will just keep getting better the longer I wait.
#1 - subnautica
ok first of all fuck you second how dare you
Age of Empires IV
It’s impossible for me to boot this game when I still have Age of Empires II right next to it in my inventory. I mean, I’m sure it’s good, but you can’t improve upon perfection.
Me after i think about AoE4 for a bit
where’s the lie?
I have a confession to make…I honestly prefer AOE 3 to 2. I like two, but I enjoy 3 more, not entirely sure why, I know a lot people really don’t like it.
i understand that, Aoe3 is pretty fun with the home city timings and gunpower units, its more about positioning and mobility than aoe2. my favorite is actually age of mythology. kinda sad the last dlc for Aoe3 got cancelled
Fond memories of old Sim City games were persuasive enough to motivate me to buy this game, but they apparently can’t convince me to actually play it. Plus, a bunch of Reddit comments said it was too easy. I deserve a challenging city builder.
COMRADE, YOU SHOULD TREAT YOURSELF TO WORKERS AND RESOURCES: SOVIET REPUBLIC!
on this list, I’ve beaten three, played three (all very briefly), and own two unplayed. Not too bad, all things considered.
(on Final Fantasy IV)
I downloaded this on my phone so I could play it during breaks at work, then spent most of my breaks scrolling social media. This is a “me” problem.
(on Sonic Adventure 2)
I think part of me thought that just by downloading this game, I could just make it 2001 again. It didn’t work. Seeing this game in my library fills me with angst.
(on Mirror’s Edge)
Bought it, then remembered I had watched my roommate play through the entire game in 2009. I’m sure it’s a lot more fun to play it yourself, but I can live with that for now.
Literally me, I watched my friend beat this when it came out and have thus had zero impetus to play it myself. Cool art style though
Mirrors edge
I finished it four times and it was a lot of fun. I remember being excited for the sequel but only playing it for a few hours even though it had a lot more stuff.
For most of the games on this list that are also in my library, I have started playing them, got bored and told myself I’d come back to them later, and then never did.
Except Witcher 3. I played for like 30 minutes and was just completely turned off and regretted buying it, so I didn’t even bother lying to myself about that one. Not my kind of game at all.
Yeah, I’m in the same boat. For every game that I actually own that’s on the list I’ve at least played it enough to find out it’s not quite for me or I got halfway through and put it down with the intention of coming back, which is just a bad habit for RPGs in general for me because I tend to burn myself out on them. I had to stop playing Witcher 3 halfway through because my brain hates me and I need to find and clear every map objective.
The only actual exception is Dwarf Fortress and that’s only because I have over 1500 hours in Rimworld and I know how much of a learning curve there’s going to be when I start it. I’ve just never had the mental fortitude to devote the time to it yet.
Games I’ve played:
- Subnautica (The game everybody wishes they could play for the first time again)
- Wildermyth
- AI War (beaten? oh my no! I completely understand the author here. Very interesting design though)
- AI War II though…
- Cave Story
- Sins of a Solar Empire
- Mirror’s Edge
- Dwarf Fortress
- Tabletop Simulator
- Witcher 3 (but I haven’t beaten it yet)
Shame list:
- Final Fantasy 4 on DS
- Celest
Of course, I have loads of games I haven’t played yet. I have imposed a rule that I have to complete two games before I can buy another.
Also,
on the Leisure Suit Larry compilation!
Cave Story
Even I’ve played it, it’s free why’s it on the list
Im pretty sure theres a commercial version a gameboy (no idea which gamboy ) version
EDIT Ah okay theres a 3DS and Switch version. I knew I have seen it somewhere. Never played it much and I dont care to play it more but im aware it exists
AI War: Fleet Commander
FUCK i almost made it through un-called-out
I got that in a bundle with like 100 other games and burned out going through the list before I even booted it up
Buy?..Games??
Final Fantasy 4
I downloaded this on my phone so I could play it during breaks at work, then spent most of my breaks scrolling social media. This is a “me” problem.
i have multiple “classic” games on my phone like this
FF4 is so good, though – if you grew up on NES/SNES jank and love those “kitchen sink” JRPG plotlines. Or Nobuo Uematsu. Or both.
