unfortunately i suspect that most new signatures are forged and botted. even if the initiative passes it’ll probably go nowhere and the organising I’ve seen while valiant has been rather poor. if it wasn’t for the drama it wouldn’t even pass the “we’ll think about it” threshold. consumer advocacy is really hard when you’re up against hundreds of millions of dollars of corporate interest and admittedly the low priority of this issue outside one specific demographic. i hope it’ll do something but i wouldn’t count on it.
I don’t know who any of these people are. Happy for you tho, or sorry that happened
Please god give me a good summary of this whole saga my brain can only handle so much poison
There’s an ongoing movement to legislate video game studios to provide offline modes or community server support for games that require online connections, so that games don’t become permanently unplayable when support for them ends. In the EU you can get citizen petitions in front of lawmakers with enough signatures.
Pirate Software is some ghoul who opposes the movement because he’s illiterate and thinks it means that studios must keep servers online forever even if zero players exist. He has a large audience and while opposing the petition caused a Streisand effect that got way more eyes on it, ensuring it got enough signatures before its deadline.
There’s actually a stream clip of Pirate Software being asked about his feelings on the initiative in a donation a week or so before he first “officially” commented on it. In the clip, just from hearing the name of the initiative, he
- guessed pretty much exactly what it was about
- noted that this would affect projects he is a part of in ways he doesn’t like and
- says he wants to say more about it later after researching it
So for him to then later make a hitpiece video and somehow no longer understanding what it is about and not saying that he believes it would be against his financial interests is absolutely not just being an idiot and later doubling down. He totally knew what he was trying to do. Problem is I was only linked the clip in the context of a longer video by an awful gamergate chud, don’t exactly feel comfortable sharing that garbage lol
Also, please put me in the gamer gulag for having researched this
I deserve this
Another nobody who is better off redacted
capitalism bad, EU has some mechanism to make parliament acknowledge a grievance, internet man stupid in public, EU process probably going forward anyway.
funny half-life video creator makes EU initiative to make it so when companies shut down games with internet components, they release the server software so people can keep playing it after the game has been shut down -> nepo baby streamer who calls himself pirate software and then puts DRM in his games throws a hissy fit and lies about the initiative because he makes money off of publishing live service games -> creator of stopkillinggames releases one last hail mary video explaining that no it won’t force indie developers at gunpoint to turn their multiplayer games into singleplayer games or whatever the fuck dude was saying -> everyone kinda hates the pirate software guy for being a douchebag narcissist so the power of spite gets like 600k people to sign the initiative getting it to its goal while he throws another hissy fit on the internet lmao
Appreciating everyone’s responses and recording your names for when it’s time to undertake operation Gamer Gulag (operation GG)
“You were disobedient so I had no choice but to abuse you.”
“I was just being stupid on purpose! To troll you, and also help you!”
Okay bud.
What if he planned this the entire time? What if he made the ultimate sacrifice for gamers?
Whenever I say something that a mod removes, consider the possibility I’m only doing it to give that mod a sense of power by giving him a post to remove.
You’re welcome.
